Time to ditch Klentak and just have a manger/GM.

From the Athletic ($$) review of Nationals needs, here is some table setting of 3rd base options (I wish we were in on either, but my gut says to get some perspective):

Donaldson would be cheaper; early projections have him netting a contract in the three-year, $75 million range, though Rendon is a franchise player and would have more of an on-field impact.

Also, FWIW, I am pretty sure I said that Tony Rendon's contract is going to be something that ages very poorly, and will get in the way of Bohm.

Has definitely felt that way for a bit, especially after the Reds signed Moose the other day. Would make sense for them to close that deal if/when they heard that Didi was no longer an option for them.

@m_sheldon: A source told MLB .com that the #reds remain in close pursuit for free agent SP Zack Wheeler. The former Mets right-hander is hoping to have a deal done with one of suitors before the Winter Meetings next week

If we get Wheeler can we calm him Wheels?

Phillies are looking at Stephen Strasburg. They just saw old friend Cole Hamels go to rival Braves but expect them to work hard to improve rotation. Phils also in on Wheeler, as noted, plus others. Also linked to SS: WAS, NYY, LAD, SD. Incumbent Nats seen as favorites for now.

So our rotation next year will be G. Cole, Strasburg, Nola, Wheeler and Arrieta? Not bad.

I think Cole or Strasburg will be tough for us... last year with Bryce, we weren't bidding against the most serious opposition or teams trying to offer creative deals (Nats, LAD)... All the big fish seemingly in on Cole and Strasburg... REAL stupid money needed here, I think...

If it comes down to the Phillies and Braves for Donaldson there's no way we can't sign him right?

Sure, if the money gets out of control the Braves can probably afford more for a guy like that.

The Phillies have reached an agreement with Zack Wheeler, sources tell
@TheAthletic
. The ex-Met stays in the NL East, and close to New Jersey, where Wheeler’s wife is from.

Jon Heyman@JonHeyman

Phillies had made an initial offer to Hamels and were just beginning talks, but when Braves jumped in and hit Coele’s goal, that decided things. Interesting Hamels got $18M, even more than the qualifying offer. @JeffPassan 1st on Hamels

Phillies still seek one more starter. Don’t rule anything out (Ok, maybe Cole can be ruled out). Gotta like their style.
