Sign Starlin Casto for the sole purpose of never having to face him again?

Kingery 3B, Haseley/Quinn CF?

Guess I was working under the assumption we trade Segura.

Infielders on the current roster are Rhys, Kingery, Segura and Arquimedes. They have to acquire at least 1 starting player.

It’s almost like they’ve done a bad job developing and finding talent and they’re struggling to find ways to improve the team now that the money is drying up.
Two days later I get a text back that says I'm a basketball player and a businessman, not a Thundercat.

I'm the idiot who thinks Brad Miller is worth re-signing to play 3B and mash righties.

And that's how you win 81 games.

I think we trade for another starter and also sign one.

Trade - Robbie Ray has 1-year left. Not sure what he'd cost, but he'd make a ton of sense. Marlins are said to be shopping Caleb Smith, another lefty with several controllable years. Looked like an ace for a stretch last year before injuring his hip. High risk/reward type player. Seems like we've been connected to Mike Minor forever. Not sure if he's still available or not.

Sign - There are lots of intriguing guys to consider for the back of the rotation. Let Price pick his reclamation project off the scrap heap. Gausman, Walker, Pineda, Nelson, Sanchez, etc.
I hate signatures, but I love irony.

If you're going to do this, why not just let him try to work with Pivetta?

No one is saying that. What we are saying is if we sign Didi and aren't spending money how does the infield shape out.

Unexpected injuries (?), expected injuries (Arrieta, whoever we grab off the scrap heap) and regression candidates (Eflin, Arrieta) all but ensure that we'll need at least 8-9 starters during the year. Pivetta and/or VV will still likely earn (or be forced into) that role at some point.

Maybe. I'm just thinking that this team WONT go over the cap. So I'd rather spend the money on more pitching than another infielder to replace a really cheap guy who had a .900 OPS for us in nearly 70 games and who won't block our top prospect who is likely to be playing on the major league team in July.

Yeah I'm cool bringing Miller back for a bench role. It does seem like Kingery or Segura will be playing third if they get Didi though, so I'm not sure we'll see much of Miller as a starter.

Why not do both, provided you can get someone on that list on the cheap? Girardi has been quoted a few times about needing "six, seven, eight" starters due to injuries and unforeseen circumstances. Get a reclamation or two, let Price work with Pivetta/VV (assuming they're not moved somewhere first), and then see how the depth shakes out.

Yeah I think I'm just more in the camp of trying to find another impact guy via trade instead of going reclamation.

Leaves you with:
Nola
Wheeler
Arrieta
Trade piece
Eflin
Velasquez
Pivetta

At that point you've got 7. I'm just going with a AAA depth guy as 8, and by that point Howard is probably your next option. Would rather spend $8 million on a reliever for a one-year deal than Gausman.

I have for so long wanted Velasquez and Pivetta to be good, if not at least predictable, but neither of those desires have been met.

Stolnis linked to an article on The Ringer that talks about this. The author has very little faith in Wheeler.

braves gave cole 1/18, zolecki says we offered half that.

if we didn't have the robertson and herrera contracts, seems like we would have almost certainly offered something like 1/15 and maybe gotten him.
