Or arrieta
Two days later I get a text back that says I'm a basketball player and a businessman, not a Thundercat.

Or if we had more and better younger players.

I'm onboard, but I'm also optimistic on Bohm and Kingery, moreso than on pitching. Frees up money to spend elsewhere.

I don't know if they're going to keep him around, but unless they can find someone else to take him off their hands, they're still stuck paying him :x

From what we saw of Smyly in September, he’d be worth an offer. He finally seemed to be recovered from his surgery. Put him with Price and he could end up being the back of the rotation lefty that the club needs.

The Phillies have *never* had a starting pitcher throw 100+ innings in a season and average at least 95 mph with his fastball. (Pivetta & Velasquez were the closest.)

Zack Wheeler was at 96.7 mph last season, 95.9 the year before.

the good phight's alex carr (who i don't think has any connections) says they might try to attach a prospect to arrieta and move him at the winter meetings.

Who is dumb enough to take him? Would need to pay most of his salary I’d guess

Yeah, had that thought earlier today because the deal was front loaded and thought it might be easier to move since the tax hit is higher than the cash outlay. Then I looked it up, Arrieta is due $20m and has a $25m tax hit. Not sure how the tax works in this situation if you retain salary, can we pay half his salary and clear $15m in tax space?

They could trade him for someone bad who is owed $20M, but it's spread out over 2+ years. Then they can get more space under the tax penalty this year. One candidate i see like that is Jeurys Familia. He had a 5.70 ERA last year and he's owed $23 million over 2 years.

I'm pretty sure that even if they do get someone to take him off their hands, they'll be stuck paying for most of him. In fact, seems the most likely scenario.

judging from all published media reports and management quotes this offseason, it looks to me like the rest of the plan is
(1) sign didi, which they are fairly confident of doing
(2) make a serious, but not insane (stupid) offer to cole, because they are willing to go over the cap limit if and only if the player that puts them over is cole. however, they don't expect to win the bidding without paying him an insane salary.
(3) if didi is signed, meaning kingery is more available as a cf backup plan, trade obubel and all of his salary for a ptbnl. i think that they think they have a decent chance of succeeding and that, if they don't sign cole, this will put them around the $190million (tax-accounting) payroll.
(4) work simultaneously on identifying trade options and 3rd (or 4th)-tier fa options for acquiring at least one more starting pitcher for under $10 million aav, hoping for something like last year's acquisitions of mike minor by the rangers or of odorizzi by the twins (.... but maybe settling for the likes of smyly and vargas.... sigh...)
