Rendon perhaps allows you to flip that via a bohm trade for perhaps a lesser commodity but still very good pitcher

They could probably get Matt Boyd for him, not that they should do that.

It would probably be hard to get a top pitching prospect for him. Most teams don't have a surplus at SP where they'd be looking to trade their SP prospects.

at the start of the offseason, rendon would have been the second of just two players in my "if and only if" over-the-tax-threshold category. right now i would prefer to have just cole and strasburg there if the phils are ruling out getting two of the three (to stay under the next threshold). however, i also started the offseason believing it worthwhile to blow by both thresholds to sign two of the three, so if the phils are too, i'm ok with that. with obubel, robertson, and arrieta coming off the books next season and, hopefully, bohm and howard fully ready by then, it should be pretty easy to tie up the one loose end (jtr's long-term contract) and get back under both thresholds with no real holes left in the roster:

rotation = cole/stras, nola, wheeler, howard, eflin
lineup = kingery-segura-harper-rendon-hoskins/bohm, cutch, jtr, haseley
(bohm or Hoskins trades to bolster outfield or pen)

I can't see Hoskins getting much in return because of they way he underperformed in 19. It's too soon to give up on him. How long did this team stick with Franco before cutting him loose?

Comparing Hoskins and Franco is crazy talk

Let's assume the Phils interest in Rendon is real and he signs here. What if the plan was to move on from Hoskins this offseason and move Bohm over to 1st and just deal with the early growing pains. If Bohm were to open the season as our everyday 1b next year, how close could he get to Hoskins production/numbers in 2020? Would he be a disaster defensively?

In 2020, he'll be, IMO, significantly worse than Hoskins offensively - 40-70 points of OBP and SLG each. Bohm hit .265 in AA last year, and hasn't seen AAA yet. But a full major league season of .250/.320/.430 wouldn't be surprising at this point. I'd probably land around .250/.360/.500 on a Hoskins projection. I don't think Bohm's 1B defense would be a disaster, but it would be a downgrade in his first year, I believe.

If the goal is to win in 2020, you want Hoskins and Rendon at the corners. Move Bohm to fill another need, or give him an OF glove in AAA.

If we fail to get Rendon, which seems likely, I think he could end up a Dodger. If he does, we could do worse than taking Turner or Muncy off their hands to alleviate their crowded infield.

A full season of AAA for Bohm wouldn't be the worst thing in the world for his development. Better than rushing him to the majors, IMO
(Brandy) only hinted at Halladay's personal issues during her Hall of Fame speech last July, when she said, "Roy would want everyone to know that people are not perfect. We're all imperfect and flawed in one way or another. We all struggle."

Yeah I worry about the dynamic where because Bohm is the only serious position prospect at the high levels they get ahead of themselves and just assume he's going to be a good every day player in the majors and soon. He's hit well so far but he's still got a fair amount of uncertainty.

But the Rendon thing seems like a Boras leverage play, and it wouldn't surprise me if the Phillies willing went along with it to drive the price up for the Nats or Dodgers.

Donaldson as I think I've already said before seems like a classic Phillies older free agent still playing at a high level move in the Ibanez/Polanco/Michael Young/Cutch/variety of pitchers mold.
Two days later I get a text back that says I'm a basketball player and a businessman, not a Thundercat.

Jim Salisbury@JSalisburyNBCS

According to sources, the Phillies have hired Paul Buchheit as their new head athletic trainer. He comes from the Boston Red Sox' big-league athletic training staff.

Salisbury’s latest is they want Didi (which we’ve heard) not really in on Rendon or Donaldson or Cole or Strasburg.

Jon Heyman‏Verified account @JonHeyman
Phillies are on Donaldson so there’s competition in division. They remain in spend mode. Incumbent Braves and Nats also in 3B market. Rangers are too. Looks like musical chairs with more teams than available stars. Rendon the other big 3B free agent, Bryant potential trade guy.

Bohm would have to lead the package with maybe Medina and Moniak being included??
