Because Cesar made $5.1M and $7.75M the past two seasons while JT made only $2.9M and $5.9M

Did the marlins just try harder to squeeze JT? He’s been obviously better than Cesar the last two years and had more bWAR at least the two years prior.

Cesar's first year of arbitration was 2017 and JT's was 2018. So Cesar is in his 4th year and JT is in his 3rd. That's probably why Cesar is projected for a lot more. Cesar was a super two player and JT wasn't. Also JT actually went to arbitration in 2018 and lost. He asked for $3.5M and got $2.9M.

They can fill the positions but right now there's only 2 safe bets for above average production - Bryce and JT.

100% agree. remember what we thought about santana's value relative to his salary after his bad year with the phils in 2018? for those watching the games: did anything about segura change from 2018 to 2019 that would be a particular reason to believe the drop in production isn't mostly randomness? weight gain? loss of foot speed? loss of strength (throwing/batting)? loss of bat speed? loss of strike zone judgement? (vision problems?)

Have a vague memory of Segura getting a scary injury. Didn't he get beaned at some point?

May 2015 - fractured pinkie (missed 16 days)
April 2017 - strained hamstring (missed 14 days)
June 2017 - high ankle sprain (missed 19 days)
April 2019 - strained hamstring (missed 10 days)

That's the only injury history listed on his bio

he got off to a fast start and then got beaned in the head. didn't miss much time but seemed like he tailed off after that.

Yeah I feel like it happened the very first day he came back from the hamstring. Might have just missed that game

The bidding for right-hander Zack Wheeler continues to progress toward resolution, with the Philadelphia Phillies seen by sources as the most potent bidders -- and the Reds, White Sox and Rangers also involved.

Wheeler, 29, is widely viewed in the industry as the best of the second tier of free-agent starting pitchers, underneath the mega-expensive Gerrit Cole and Stephen Strasburg. Wheeler had a solid season for the Mets last year, posting a 3.96 ERA, and other teams are pursuing him ardently for the same reasons they did before the trade deadline. He's young, relative to other free-agent starters; he's been healthy recently, with 60 starts over the last two seasons, and he has plus stuff, with an average fastball velocity of 96.7 mph in 2019, fourth-best in the majors.

According to sources, Wheeler is expected to get a deal of at least five years, and at least $100 million. The Phillies have a need for starting pitching help, and with Jake Arrieta entering the last year of his deal, Philadelphia has big-market budget power and some forthcoming payroll flexibility.

Ken Rosenthal@Ken_Rosenthal 9m
Still alive for Wheeler, per sources: #Phillies, #Reds, #WhiteSox. Possible other teams remain in mix; #Angels also have shown real interest. Phillies’ push first reported by
@Buster_ESPN.

Can’t say I’m a huge fan of girardi publicly gassing up a guy we’re presumably in free agency talks with like this. It’s not like Didi is some sort of unanimous stud, there’s definitely a number where this is a bad overpay. Unless this is like a 3D chess move and we’re not actually interested.

Maybe he's just doing a solid for a former employee he appreciates.

i assumed the didi interest was solely because of girardi. hopefully it's only for something like 3/39-42.

I don’t have many sources but have heard the Didi thing is basically done. Would be a surprise if he isn’t here next year.
