Yeah, the team is good enough to get hot for 2 months.

I definitely agree. If Smyly continues to pitch well and they can get some good starts out of Vargas (and assuming, of course, Nola pitches well), they could definitely make a run.

Wonder who’s getting hurt in the next week so Nick can come back up.

Yeah, if Vargas is just league average, Smyly not necessarily as good as his first 2 starts but still above average, they'll be a big improvement over who they replaced. And if the offense heats up, they can definitely make a run at the Braves.

Wouldn't mind a bit if Nick was the PTBNL

Feel like “league/above average” can’t just refer to ERA, but also how deep they go into games. With how many injuries the pen has had the starters can’t be going 5 in 4 out of every 5 games.

Straily gave up 6 runs - on a pair of 3-run HRs - in 5 innings in his Iron Pig debut. Looks like he was solid in six starts at Norfolk, maybe he was just dragged down being in rat-infested Baltimore earlier. It's a low bar to clear, but I think he could move up when it becomes obvious Jake isn't going to "pitch through" the bone spur.

So I was a good boy and read my Inky this AM. Some interesting tidbits:

Jake thinks he can normally go 6 innings. He says long layoffs between innings really makes his elbow deteriorate so while having a 4 run 4th was great, the downtime made Arrieta's bone spur flare up. He told Gabe prior to the 5th that it would be a hitter by hitter situation and it obviously wasn't going well.

The Inky also did a rehashing of the 2009 team and how good it was. They included a look back on the 2009 through '11 teams. What I didn't remember was that they were 3.5 games out of first at the end of July in '10 and then went 41-17 the rest of the way to win the division by 6 games. That staff had Roy though. Still hoping we get hot here in August.

I took a moment to look because I thought that Arrieta gets iffy after 4 innings. Turns out his average outing is 5.8 innings. To my surprise the has 13 wins when he pitches. I think my memory is tarnished by the big run total losses that he has authored (giving up 5+ runs), which is also a little less then my memory has expected.

He has not pitched 6 innings since June, and his last +6 inning game was May 25.

2008 vs 2009-2011 should be a case study for the mouthbreathers who get to high and low throughout the course of the regular season.

Sorry if this was posted somewhere else, but Dylan Cozens was released. He had homered 40 times and drove in 125 runs in 2016 at Double-A Reading. But he has struck out 24 times in 39 career at-bats at the major league level.

It's amazing what's happened to this pitching staff this season.

8/2 = Morgan to 10-day
7/27 = Hunter goes from 10-day to 60-day, done for season
7/20 = Dominguez goes from 10-day to 60-day, likely done for season
7/16 = Ramos to 10-day (and hasn't returned yet); Nicasio returns
7/14 = Hunter to 10-day; Ramos returns
7/12 = Neshek goes from 10-day to 60-day, likely done for season
7/7 = Arrieta reveals he's been pitching with bone spur in elbow, will try to get through it
7/4 = Nicasio to 10-day
6/28 = Hunter returns
6/21 = Morgan returns
6/20 = Neshek to 10-day
6/17 = Eickhoff to 10-day (and hasn't returned yet)
6/16 = Neshek returns
6/7 = Dominguez to 10-day; Eflin returns
6/4 = Arano goes from 10-day to 7-day to 60-day, likely done for season
5/31 = Eflin to 10-day
5/29 = Morgan to 10-day
5/25 = Neshek to 10-day; Robertson goes from 10-day to 60-day, done for season
5/24 = Velasquez returns
5/13 = Ramos to 10-day
5/11 = Velasquez to 10-day
4/20 = Arano to 10-day
4/17 = Hunter goes from 10-day to 60-day

I actually believe he would have a shot in another org. It's just not working out here.
