Does Willie mays not count as a met? I really dont remember what his met career was like, but he had a pretty good career over all.

His first season with the Mets wasn't bad. His second ans last season was very bad.
Teams lie, sometimes for good reasons, sometimes for bad. They do it to get an advantage while they look at the trade market or just because they can

As much as you would consider Richie Ashburn a Cub and a Met. So if that cup of tea is for you, then Willie was a Mets.

For your horror I offer this tidbit: Ashburn had a career high 7 home runs in 1962 with the Mets, his previous high was 4 in 1951. If not for '51 and '62, he was good for between 0 - 3.

It's funny because in my mind as a 7 year old just starting to watch baseball in the early 70s, I just thought of Willie Mays as a met. I am too young to remember him as anything else. I sort of assumed his met career was longer than a season and a half.

I'm REALLY old so I of course remember Willie mostly as a Giant, but also as a Met. Irked me off that then and later, as sportwriters do, most of the articles about him were that it was such a shame to see him playing out his days in a Mets a uniform, a shell of his former self. I thought it was cool to be able to see him out on the field more often, and back playing in NY where he started his career. As smitty said, his first year didn't look too bad. In fact it was pretty damn good, with a 145 OPS, but people didn't know from OPS in those days, they just saw that he didn't hit .300 or hit 20 hrs. His final year was pretty bad, but he did get into the playoffs and World Series, where he hit .300 and drove in a couple runs, so there's that. All in all a fitting farewell to my mind.

I see now why you are not a professor of history.

I thought your “pretty good” comment was, like, a gag.

And I am younger than you!

There was an article in the New York Times (?) recently on the history of sports talk radio, and on the first call-in show the subject up for discussion was "Who's better, Mays or Mantle?" Hint: it was Willie, with Mickey's bad knees trumping Mays' Mets history on the negative side.

My Uncle started taking me to the NY Giants/Phillies games when I was six. We always went early to see what he called, the "greatest player there ever was" take infield practice. Mays at SS was unbelievable; like a water bug on a pond. His range and glove was phenomenal. Unfortunately he could never play that position because someone would have cracked him up on a play around the bag. He did alright in CF though. He most likely could have been a HOFer at any position on the field except the mound.

Matt Ehalt @MattEhalt
Woah. Mets say No. 5 prospect Franklyn Kilome, who they received in the deal for Asdrubal Cabrera, underwent Tommy John.

Van Wagenen is the new GM but he'll need to wrap up things at CAA before he's officially announced. He's the agent for deGrom and Syndergaard, among other Mets
