Yeah, that's why re-signing LaRoche for 2 years before last season didn't make any sense. They could've put Zimmerman at 1B and Rendon at 3B and been OK without an overpaid LaRoche.

almost the same contract as Howard actually, to the years.

Too early to give up on him, and he does have a great SO/W ratio, but man, he's been pretty bad for a good while now. He still always manages to take his turn, but they may be a bad thing in a very short while.

Fwiw, his xFIP is 2.96 and his BABIP is .361.

Yeah, he's clearly still doing some things exceptionally well, though the results haven't been there. He's been shelled after the fifth inning, which may be something he'll overcome as the season goes on, or may be a huge problem for someone with a reputation as a workhorse.

If Howard can continue hitting at this pace for the next 3 seasons, the rest of his contract might not end up being a complete disaster. Overpaid, yes, but not a complete disaster. That's the best case scenario at this point, not to be a complete disaster.

Yeah. There are guys getting paid a lot who completely suck like B. J. Upton and Dan Uggla. Prince Fielder is having a rough start. There are others.

Howard really shouldn't have started vs. Gio yesterday. Would like to see Ruf back on the roster. Hopefully his hands haven't gotten all fat while on the DL.

Biggest problem with Howard's contract is 1B is an easier position to fill with a good hitter than most others. And big 1Bmen often decline more quickly and suddenly than others.
Teams lie, sometimes for good reasons, sometimes for bad. They do it to get an advantage while they look at the trade market or just because they can

Has he declined sufficiently for Rube to get him?

Oddly since it was talked about randomly at the beginning of the year in this thread, Votto has been subpar. Still a great OBP but not hitting for much power.
