Time to add Miggy Cabrera to this thread. 10 years, $292MM. He turns 31 in three weeks.

I hope it's structured like Pujols where it gets REALLY expensive in the final years.

Guess we can scratch Dave Dombrowski off the list of people who can figure out which heavy people to sign to 10 year deals.

it really is amazing. has any mega-contract for a "thick-bodied" corner if/of ever worked out? or for a 1b of any body type? i can only think of a long, long list of those that haven't. even gehrig got taken out by a random rare disease.

and yet no gm seems able to resist handing one out sometime during his career.
gm's dig chicks that dig the long ball, i guess.

Pretty crazy. I have a lot respect for Cabrera, who it looked like was going to eat, drink and variously ingest himself out of baseball early back when he was in his twenties and instead really turned his life around. But his history makes this deal even more, um, daring.

The Tigers got two good years out of Fielder and managed to trade him just before he's about to fall off the cliff. No small accomplishment.

For a very angry Ian Kinsler. Which could go either way. Did you see the ESPN the Mag interview piece with him? Dude is crazy.

I scratched him off when he gave Prince Fielder 9 years.

They had to pay $30 million to the Rangers though.

$5MM more than we're paying Ryan Howard for this year. And the next. And the next.

Keri says that there are vesting options for 11th and 12th seasons too. I assume that it's like the Cliff Lee deal, where if it vests, that's actually a good thing for the team b/c it means the player was productive enough to play a lot at the back end of the contract. But LOL at the idea of Miggy being fit enough to play at age 42 and 43.

They basically saw what happened with Howard and said "who cares?"
Cabrera is just a better version of Howard, and they gave him twice the years. Both were roughly the same age (Cabrera even a little older). Both coming off some amazing seasons (lest we forget, Howard's full season LOW in home runs when he signed his deal was 45). Probably the biggest key: both have played most of their team's games. Cabrera only played fewer than 150 this past season and even with that, still played 148.

What does that have to do with Bleh's response to your post?

They ended up essentially paying Fielder $76M for two years and committing at least $62M to 31-year-old, league-average-hitter Ian Kinsler

It could have been worse, but the Tigers fucked up

I just wrote a longish post calculating roughly how much per ticket goes to his contract, but cyberspace ate it thanks to my non-functional internet. It's about $10 per home ticket, which sounds like a lot until you think of all the other revenue streams. I think the Tigers are still laughing all the way to the bank. There's a ton of money in baseball

My original post started out more critical of the contract.
