Helps to explain why Fielder got almost twice as many years and dollars. We'll see how it plays out.

When Fielder goes, he'll probably crash hard, just like his dad.

and Ryan Howard allegedly weighs 240. Look, you can come up with whatever metric you want but if it's controversial to say that heavier people age more poorly than non-heavy people in athletic endeavors...

no it's controversial to say

Don't sign anybody to a long term deal who weighs over X pounds and I'm thinking X is around 240 but could be 10 lbs either way

not signing anyone in the 230-250lb weight range to long term deals regardless of any other factors seems silly

Right, because you don't like absolutes. But when you think about whether you'd avoid more problems than you would solve (Did you read the article Trent linked to?), you'd invariably agree that you would avoid more problems.

Now, I'll allow that you could probably just do this analysis and say don't sign long term deals and what fun would that be? However, it really seems given the wealth of scientific studies that says it's bad to be heavy that the odds are going to be worse for heavier baseball players. This does NOT mean that all heavy players will be bad as old men, just that you aren't smart enough to figure out which ones will be good. And i use the royal you here.

i also wouldn't sign berkman because he is fragile regardless of weight

yeah but still

ok so your contention is that no one on this earth is smart enough to figure out which 230-250 lb players are good enough to sign longterm?

it's hard to score a touchdown when the goal line keeps being moved out from under me

Actually, sure. Please find me the GM that consistently knows which heavy players to sign. I would think the list starts with Cashman and CC and Dombrowski and Miggy. Jason Giambi didn't work out too well for Cashman but I don't know his body fat percentage, seemed like he had a gut. Tex and ARod have been way worse for him but they were skinny.

You got Miggy as an unqualified success but then what about Fielder? If and when Fielder turns it around, you may be on to something.

jason giambi was good until he got ripped. and then he was still pretty good.

edit: listed at 250, and that number usually never changes throughout someone's career.

A stretch for this list, imo, but at least he cited Soriano too

I'm not sure that any deal with one or two years left--one where not only is the player is still playing, but he's a positive WAR player (sorry Rickie Weeks and Adam Dunn)--merits a mention on this list.

I also don't see how you can disregard the money owed to Vernon Wells but count the deferred money owed to Rafael Soriano.

The Jose Reyes contract does not seem to belong on this list.
