Interestingly he's in a similar situation as Howard. He was hitting well, got the big deal and then hurt his leg. His deal is the knee on his push off leg when he hits. One radio listener/caller asked Votto, when he was on the air, if he felt good about stealing $25M a year from the Reds. Ouch!

Joey Votto played in 162 games last year, and had a 154 OPS+. His career # is a 155. He led the league in OBP, Walks, Games, Runs Created, and Times on Base, and was in the top 10 of a bazillion others.

Now you know why John Boehner got elected to Congress. If Cincinnati wanted to swap out Votto for Howard, Amaro should do it in a minute. However that being said, JV had a tough year last season. He allowed his weaker performance at the plate to get to him to the point that he lost his concentration in the field. It was too bad. He should be a good player. If he gets off to a poor start, he may end up in the Howard/Pujols/Hamilton bin of guys that choked on their long term deals.
Yo, anonymous high-ranking baseball execs ripping Cabrera deal: Put your name on quotes so we can compare it to your own deals.

Thank you. I was trying to think whether there was another Joey Votto playing in the league. The only one I knew was not only good last year, but good every part of last year.

6 years/$100M (2014-19), plus 2020 club option
signed extension with Washington 2/26/12
14-18:$14M annually. 19:$18M, 20:$18M club option ($2M buyout)
5 year/$10M personal-services contract, to begin once playing career ends
no-trade protection, beginning in 2014
if traded in 2012-13, salaries increase to $16M in 2014 and $18M in 2015-18, with 2019 and 2020 option unchanged and personal-services contract voided
It doesn't seem too bad in terms of $$ especially relative to the other deals and considering likelihood of inflation over the next 8 years. However, the number of years with decent if not outrageous salary for a 27 year old 3Bman who has already shown some decline and injury problems is going to look bad eventually.
"We have to look at Ryan, though, and say, 'Would I like Ryan to play third? Yeah, I would. For a long time? Yes,'" Williams said Monday night in an interview with 106.7 The Fan. "But the fact of the matter is, Ryan's got an arthritic shoulder.
