Isn't there any chance Ryan surprises everyone this season?

If he combines his OPS vs. RHP in 2013 with his OPS vs. LHP in 2014, we got a stew going.

reasons it is tough for any deal to match the RHF:
a) 2 years before necessary.
b) post-prime decline already evident.
c) bottom of the defensive spectrum player so value disappears if offense isn't superior
d) major platoon split issues with a proven tendency to create lineup construction problems.
all of these are mentioned frequently in the discussions above and elsewhere, but i would add
...
e) player now consistently a sub-replacement value, in other words hurting the team on the field just by playing, which is considerable less common than just poor return on a big contract hurting the team financial standing.
f) extreme organizational denial of the significance of the aging curve consistently leads to a false assumption of a chance of a rebound, leading to...
g) expecting too much in trade making him even more untradable
h) being too willing to trade singleton and santana, setting back the rebuilding process
i) continuing to run him out there as a starter, preventing the team from properly using and assessing the next generation of 1b options (brown, ruf, franco), still further setting back rebuilding.

It's spring. I expect him to rebound, as I have the last couple of springs.

I don't expect it enough to draft him for my fantasy team...maybe as a very late rounder, just in case.

I saw where Sandberg said yesterday that Ryan would be the starting first baseman. I hope he plays well enough to trade.

All else equal, I bet he would be better this year. That injury is a very serious injury that often takes years to recover from. But all else isn't equal, of course. For one thing, he's a year older. For another, everyone is going to be on him. I think this is the year the fans turn on him, which won't be good for a guy like Howard. I really wanted him to get traded for that reason alone. He's a pretty standup guy and good teammate and he was simply incredible for a while there. It's not his fault the Phillies gave him to much money. He had a shitty year with his family turning on each other last year. I'd hate to see the fans turn on him, too.

If Ruben has a heart, he'll give Howard away for a few million and a mediocre AA prospect.

I strongly suspect he would have done so if possible, but neither of us can know that

well it's a figure of speech. I don't want to see him heckled.

I think they are hoping there's an opening somewhere for a LH bat/DH during spring training. They probably can't send him away for absolutely nothing, but I'm sure they'll take next to that. The fact that they haven't made a deal makes me think they've gotten offers that would just be too embarrassing and useless to accept this far from the season. I'll be surprised if he's with the club on June 1st.

He's been a good pitch hitter, I think, or at least he was through the first portion of his career, probably because he usually pinch hits with men on base. Hard to say how good he'd be starting 1 or 2 times a week and coming off the bench the rest of the time. That's a completely different animal. Uncharted territory.

Judge Judy just signed a new contract. $47 million per yr.

not sure how her arm is.

smh
(Brandy) only hinted at Halladay's personal issues during her Hall of Fame speech last July, when she said, "Roy would want everyone to know that people are not perfect. We're all imperfect and flawed in one way or another. We all struggle."
