I'm not so sure the Sixers would even have a ton of interest in giving Thad the same deal he has now. Tying up 10M in cap space on a role player at this stage in the rebuild doesn't seem like a particularly Hinkie thing to do. Hell, they can trade him and re-sign him potentially, it's not like they have to worry about his bird rights.

I just think if Thad's biggest concern is spending his prime on a losing team, this season isn't going to do all that much to change his mind.

If not resigning Thad, what are the Sixers going to do with their cap space? I get acquiring expirings (to ultimately acquire assets), but my understanding is that we have a ton of cap space. There was talk that we could conceivably take on both the Lin and Stoudemire contracts.

And why would it be so un-Hinkie to sign a gamer like Thad? He's an analytics guy, yes. But he strikes as someone who also would place value on team chemistry.

Thad Young signed to 4 year $32M >>> Lance Stephenson to any contract

I'll squeeze Thad into the 3 spot, before I add a clubhouse cancer like Stephenson in the locker room with all my 20 something Sixer puppies.

I agree- I understand that is his ideal position. But he's athletic enough that he can plug in to either forward positions. I love the prospect of McDaniel starting as well (that would be tremendous value from a rookie 2nd round pick!). Just don't think that it would preclude us from resigning Thad.

My primary point is that if we are going to spend money on players, why not spend it on guys who know the system, and fit in well in the locker room?

I'm not sure we have any evidence to judge from on hink potentially signing a young to a deal. sixers are in extreme couponing mode now, but at some point they're going to need to hand out contracts and sign guys to assemble a top 8 or 9. thad is still going to be good in 2 years when the team is better and has continued to add pieces. he's already said he understands the situation and is excited for the potential of what this can build into.

with all that said, if he wants to go, that's fair. he's been first class during his time here. but I do believe he's very interested in how this team develops this year. might even be fun for him to have a buncha kids around him excited to play everyday. in the event they move him, hinkie has added guys already to kind of replace his skillset.

He's kind of not though. He really struggled to cover 3s back in the day, let alone when he got switched onto guards.

I love Thad, I'm just not sure if he has a future here.

The fact that he traded away or released every single other player that was on the team when he got here?

Thad really needed to do at least one of two things well to be considered more than a very nice role player at the nba level...

1. Improve his defensive rebounding. He is well below average in that department specifically for a 4. He did not improve, but he is a very good offensive rebounder though.

2. Develop a consistent three point shot, preferably the corner 3.

He does provide some other nice skills, but without either of those two I really can't tie up long term even at his current salary.

The bigger thing is that it's just kind of dumb to commit long term to any role player unless you are either (1) "one guy away" or (2) have to pay a premium for a restricted free agent.

The way you sustain success in the NBA is to pay your stars the max and rotate in cost effective role players as they fit around your stars. Signing the role player first is backwards, especially one like Thad that doesn't fit with everyone.

I'm still shocked that we got McDaniels with #32.
