Sorry if this has been has been posted already, since I tend to pop into the politics thread, say something annoying even to myself, and then pop out again, but this article by Mark Lilla on identity politics and liberalism has been drawing a lot of attention. It's a good bit too broad and sweeping for me, but I think a lot of the points are sound on somehow liberals have lost the ability to speak of common problems in a way that resonates with everyone, well , in common. However, I can't say my opiniion is shared by the majority of NYT commenters.

While checking to see if it had gone up, it was interesting to see that that last time Lilla's name came up was when he wrote an op-ed for the WSJ in 2010 on the death of the conservative intellectual tradition. TV had a lot of interesting and generally admiring things to say about Lilla as well as good insight on the issue. Although he did also say:

I really do think we're heading to a moment like 1968 here for the Republicans. Historical analogies are always perilous and usually facile, so I don't want to push it too hard.

But I think the mainstream reaction to all this may lead to an enduring Democratic majority.

so you can't get everything right.

Weirdly I was wondering if we were headed toward a 1968 reboot recently. However, now that the future president is Rening on promise after promise to his people, I'm wondering if we're headed more to 1861 monent.

for me, Lilla's a bit too nostalgic for some kind of kumbaya nationalism (an identification I just made up) than an "American liberalism" (a category I feel like Lilla made up).

"Liberalism" is at its most resonant in its most abstract forms. The liberal idea is a way, or ways, of being, rather than a place to be. Which makes it an impractical place to try to assemble. As Walter Sobchak might say, it's more of an ethos.

Well, no. That is FBI who deals with that. Counter Intel is a Fed problem, as is law enforcement.

DHS strattles the line a little, but it is domestic and law too.

So stay hopeful and choose your dance partner wisely.

We warned the alt right that Trump was a con man. Now they're finding out the hard way that he's been a NY liberal elite all along.

Under a guy you most definitely hate.

Seems like it has a much bigger chance of being a giant wart on her resume than anything else.

I'd be impressed if anyone here could name three out of the four most recent ambassadors to the Un. It's going from one of the most recognizable governors to obscurity basically.

the national polls appear to have been correct, fwiw. it was state polls for PA and Michigan that were 'wrong'. before the Democrats decide to abandon ship and stop backing their base, they might want to just tweak a few things in a few states instead.

In October, however, Haley switched her position, saying she would vote for Trump even though she was "not a fan."

she kissed the ring, and King Trump forgave.

she appears to be concerned with fiscal matters and deregulating, so i'm not sure what expertise she brings to this role.
