Yeah, it really doesn't resonate. "I'm taking the high road" is just not very effective when said explicitly, and I don't necessarily like a person more when s/he says it. It's more difficult, but more genuine, to address the criticism head on while maintaining dignity, and bringing the conversation back to a high level. "This is an issue, a conversation, that can easily divide people. My opponent would love to talk about X, but it's a distraction from... blah blah blah." Obama is very adept at this. Hillary Clinton is not.
