it's now being reported Sheldon Adelson bought the Las Vegas Review-Journal. He was being so secretive about it his own reporters didn't know who now owned the paper. He bought it for $140 million dollars, which is nowhere near what it's worth.

He says he has no 'personal' interest. There's a loophole big enough there you can drive a truck through.

Shit.

The son-in-law of billionaire casino owner Sheldon Adelson arranged the $140 million purchase of the Las Vegas Review-Journal on Adelson's behalf, sources confirmed Wednesday.

Patrick Dumont, who is listed on the website of Las Vegas Sands Corp. as the company's senior vice president of finance and strategy, put together the deal at the behest of his father-in-law, the chairman and CEO of the casino operator.

Considering the calligraphy in question was the shahada, I think those parents have a right to be pretty pissed. What was the person who came up with that thinking?

they learn about religions in the class. they learned about christianity and judaism and will learn about hinduism and buddhism as well. this is one of the five pillars. i dont see the big deal. theyre not being converted as they weren't reciting it. they're learning about a religion. the topic was 'practicing calligraphy', not 'be a muslim'.
the person who organizedthe protest:

“She gave up the Lord’s time,” Herndon said of LaPorte. “She gave it up and gave it to Mohammed.”

this lady isn't upset with it because it's religious, she's upset because it isn't the right form of religion. they held a meeting at a church to discuss how wrong it was to bring religion into the class. that's different than why others may be opposed to it.

Truly. You could literally choose any other passage to demonstrate the "artistic complexity of calligraphy." Which I'm not quite sure what that teaches anyway, or isn't self-evident from looking at it. Having students copy out an article of Islamic faith is bound to be incendiary.

Could have chosen this one, I guess, and then said "Hah! Hah! It's the Lord's Prayer!"
