A correspondent Fox's Smith is talking to notes French authorities believe that passport & other docs they've found at the sites may be fake/planted.

Pretty cool to try to fake evidence to try to fuel a horribly ignorant narrative.

Imo, there can be a middle ground like it's fucked up this was barely cared about and now everyone cares and has an opinion. I know it makes people feel shitty to realize that we're largely self-centered people, but the fact that this shit happens frequently in parts of the world is glossed over all too often in the west, imo.

One of the suicide bombers in Friday's attacks has been identified as Ismael Omar Mostefai, according to a French member of Parliament. Mostefai lived in Chartres at least until 2012, said Jean-Pierre Gorges, who is mayor of the French town as well as a member of Parliament, via Facebook.

sorry - was answering the hypothetical question "why would a terrorist conveniently leave his syrian passport"

hypothesizing that the terrorist(s) would want people to know who did this.

no; i can tell you're passionate about this; and when you get passionate, you tend to blend between commentary and personal attacks. that's all.

agreed, my friend tried to play this perspective with me yesterday - that this happens all the time in other countries and we don't care. I found it to be a really callous perspective and slightly snide comment but one that was at it's core truthful.

i mean, it's a fair point. i compare it to local crime stories. i very rarely think about a thief breaking-and-entering my home until it happens to someone else on my block. when it happens, and it has, it's a terrifying moment. and changes my perspective on neighborhood safety.

or that he'd want people to think they knew who did this, and that he'd want them to think one of the gang was from Syria even if he wasn't, hence the possibility the passport's bogus further stirs the pot

The whole "Why didn't we mourn for Lebanon" thing is a weird critique to me. Obviously the point trying to be made is that we only care when it's white people, but there are other components there that are just being glossed over. I care about France more because we have very real connections to French culture. Obviously we have a long history with France being an ally of ours. It's just #$!&@ to automatically turn it into this "where were you all when Lebanon happened" racist critique. France is closer to home for myriad reasons.

When dog bites man - or bomb goes off in Lebanon - it's not shocking. It's normal, no matter what color the people being bit or blowed up. And, FWIW, the people in Lebanon are "white" for the most part.

When man bites dog - or a bomb goes off in France - it is shocking. It's newsworthy.

The horror, the pointlessness, the tragedy is equal - if not great in Beirut, where it's business as usual.

Now, having said that, our response beyond reporting it is odd. Putting the French flag out at football games, or on buildings, or on your FB profile is really a sadly misplaced feelgood effort. You're not helping anyone in Paris, you're just squawking to your FB friends that you are compassionate.
