I almost had to kill a frenchman just now. We are staying in this apartment and we've had trouble with the water. The toilet also stopped working yesterday. I tried to look at it myself, but it's a type I've never seen before and I didn't want to break something, so I called to let them know about the problem. He told me how to take off the top so I fiddled with it and got it to work, though I could tell there was a part missing. I texted him and told him we had it working and that it would probably be ok until Friday. He said he's stop by anyway. All of that is good. Well, it's not good I had to fiddle around with someone else's dirty toilet, but I'm not someone to complain about something like that. I just did it and was glad I could get it to work.

Flash to today: Today the toilet flushed, but then wouldn't turn off. I could tell the problem was that it wasn't sealing at the bottom, but it was way at the bottom of the tank under some weird contraption that I've never seen before. I tried to straighten it to get it to seal, but again, I didn't want to mess with it too much and he said he was coming anyway in an hour so I just let it alone. I mean, why would I do anything else? There's no way I was going elbow deep into a very unhealthy looking toilet when the guy who owns the place is coming to look at it in less than an hour. So he shows up and he repeats the very things I said was wrong (it's not hard to figure it out, even with the different mechanisms inside). He then asked me where I was from. I told him the US and right away he goes, "Oh, I see the problem, you guys aren't used to doing things for yourselves." Needless to say, I didn't react the best to that. First of all, I did fix it myself the first time and I told him he didn't need to come. So I didn't ask for him to be there. Second, it broke a second time and HE couldn't fix it either because a part broke off and there's a ton of calcium buildup. I told him he didn't know what he was talking about, that Americans build and fix their own stuff all the time. In fact, a whole do-it-yourself industry exists with Home Depot, etc, and all the self help projects. Americans do MUCH more of this than anyone in Europe as far as I've seen. And this is putting aside the fact that I tried to help and I tried to avoid needing him to come. If he hadn't come on his own, I would have probably fixed it the second time without complaint.

I'm having trouble letting this go at the moment. I seriously want to call him back up and yell at him.

Is he the owner, MB? If so, remind him not so long ago that the French lopped the heads off members of the propertied class over issues not much different than yours.

Plus the French are weird about hygiene, let's face it. infrequent showers, hairy women's armpits, bidets, w.t.effe.

really weird that a dude who owns the house would want you fiddling around with equipment you've never seen just so he doesnt have to crawl out of bed. and yes, fiddling with it when he's coming over anyway makes no sense.

OK, I'm getting over it. I just hate that stereotype, along with the idea that Americans are lazy.

I should have just said that I could tell the toilet was french because it didn't work without a hassle, but I didn't want to stereotype him as a response to his nonsense.

He wasn't joking though. He was annoyed and I have no idea why when I tried to fix it myself and told him not to come. That's ok. I'll trash him in the review of the place.

Next time ask him if he speaks German, if he says no say you're welcome.
