STATE COLLEGE, Pa.
A Pennsylvania beauty queen has been jailed on charges she faked having leukemia to benefit from fundraisers, and will be stripped of her title.
Online court records show Brandi Lee Weaver-Gates, 23, of State College was arraigned Tuesday on charges of theft by deception and receiving stolen property.
State police say an April bingo benefit raised $14,000 for the recently crowned Miss Pennsylvania U.S. International pageant winner.
Butler’s Beauties, the company that sponsors the pageant, says in a Facebook page statement that it also was “led to believe that she was dealing with this horrible disease” and are making her return her crown and sash.
State police said Wednesday that they were getting calls from people reporting they donated money to support Weaver-Gates.
“We’re expecting an overwhelming response from victims to come forward,” Trooper Thomas Stock of the Rockview station said Wednesday.
The state police investigation into Weaver-Gates started after troopers got an anonymous tip that she was “faking” having cancer, according to court documents.
The tipster reached out after she called Johns Hopkins Medical Center in Baltimore, where Weaver-Gates said she was receiving treatment, to make a donation to Weaver-Gates’ medical bills. The hospital reported that Weaver-Gates was not a patient there.
The tipster reported that Weaver-Gates also told her that she received treatment at other facilities, including UPMC Altoona and Geisinger Medical Center. When investigators contacted each of the hospitals, employees reported there was no record of Weaver-Gates ever being there, or had been there years ago, before her alleged diagnosis with leukemia in 2013.
Stock said Wednesday that police haven’t yet determined a total amount raised to cover Weaver-Gates’ medical expenses, but there were four fundraisers held to contribute to medical bills. One event, called Bingo for Brandi, raised about $14,000, according to court documents.
Organizers from that event set up an account from the proceeds and would write checks to Weaver-Gates as she provided treatment bills, Stock said.
“We do have a copy of one bill that we’ve verified is a fake bill,” Stock said.
Investigators haven’t found any evidence that Weaver-Gates has any kind of medical condition, Stock said.
Weaver-Gates was being held Wednesday at Centre County Correctional Facility in lieu of $150,000 bail.

yeah, no HIPPA concerns if there's no patient to protect.Monkeyboy wrote:pacino wrote:

I didn't realize hospitals could say that a person wasn't a patient somewhere.
What a horrible person.
