Seems to belong here :-D

Just no interest in taking the family there? It's not all sand/ocean. There's plenty of stuff to do on the boardwalks and in the shore town itself

I think my problem is that because I've never been there I don't know what to do - what towns to go to, how to get there, where to park, what to do once there, etc. So I feel like if I went there I'd waste a day wandering aimlessly, not seeing or doing much, and probably getting my car towed or something.

I need a guide.

It's not a whole lot different from tailgating.

Summer weekends can be hellishly crowded, so I'd avoid that. Weekdays are much better. Parking is much less an issue for one.

September after Labor Day is ideal--few crowds and the water is still warm, though beaches may not have life guards and so swimming might not be the wisest thing you can do.

All you really need for a day at the beach is some food and rink, sunscreen, a swimsuit, and a towel. I always bring something to read and I like to sit in a beach chair. Frisbees, footballs, boogie boards and so forth are optional equipment.

I'd say the best way to go if feasible is stay in a nice B&B in Cape May in September. Great restaurants, decent beach, the B&Bs often have beach equipment you can borrow, and there's non-beach stuff to do. Alternatively, there's Wildwood--for a family, I'd recommend North Wildwood, rather than Wildwood itself. If you're staying in one of the motels, they have parking available. Beach towns definitely have different vibes, so a bit of research is in order.

Among the different shore points, I'm most familiar with Seaside Heights and can offer ideas there. The girls would love the boardwalk because there's all kinds of rides (Not as many as before unfortunately. THANKS SANDY. THANKS INFERNO.), there's all kinds of carnival games, there's mini golf, there's go-kart racing, there's several arcade places w/ plenty of prizes, there's a 100-yr old carousel, there are wheels of chance where you can win boxes of candy or sports merchandise (mostly a mix of Phillies, Mets, Yankees, Eagles, Giants and Jets), there are several restaurants, pizza places and bars. Every Wednesday night they have fireworks shows on the beach. The Aztec motel is right on the boardwalk and has parking underneath, and there's a parking lot a few blocks away where you can park for free if all the spaces are taken. There's a water park they tore down and rebuilt across the street. There are night clubs and comedy clubs a few blocks in. Most of the motels in the area have swimming pools if the kids don't wanna do the ocean. The BlueClaws are less than 30 minutes away if you need a baseball fix. If you did a 3-day trip, like check-in on Monday afternoon, leave Thursday morning, that would be more than enough time to do everything there while avoiding all the weekend crowds (and prices)

Thanks pals, this is good stuff. Maybe we'll see if we can get there next month.

My friend's brother rode his bike from Philly to Allentown just to hang out. And here I am having pizza for the third time in three days.

Phat, if you can just stay on the beach and not worry about rides, ventnor beach is great. Free parking 2 blocks away, never crowded, and you can set up near the municipal building where there are bathrooms and showers. There's always non-crowded areas of beach points too. We go almost evrry weekend to either sea isle, ocnj, and ventnor, and only deal with cross/traffic on Memorial Day, July 4th, and labor day

I'll say it again: Henlopen City Oyster House, the best bartender is Jamie, or a(muse), the chef/owner is Hari Cameron (James Beard nominee), the bartender is Palma, the place is awesome. Go to those two places and you'll be happy. Also, Arena's Bar and Deli is worth a stop if you want to rub elbows with locals. They have a taco night. It's great. Tell them you know Mike Clee. They'll probably look at you funny.
