no, they're not common. to get in to grad school, they are. fellowships, maybe. but just to apply for a job? not a common requirement at all
Yeah, I got my quasi-academic field job with no letters of recommendation; just a couple of phone references once they were ready to make an offer. I didn't even submit a cover letter with my application. But I guess on the technology side of things the whole hiring process is more about proving you're not bullshitting your skill set on your resume.
