It's probably so they can weed out people who are not really, really serious about it.

yeah, I sort of hear that, but any library job is going to get hundreds, toward a thousand, applications no matter what. say you whittle that down to a hundred, that is still just a ton, hours and hours, of working people's time wasted

Well, presumably, people aren't writing a different letter for each job you apply for. Ideally, you get your letters when you're about to graduate and go on the market for the first time, and the college you attended keep those letters in a file, and they send it out when you request them to do so.

Wouldn't that mostly apply to a first job, though? I'm with phandz on this. It can be bad enough wrangling three references once you basically have the job

yeah, I'm not talking about professors for whom writing letters is part of the gig. I would just have to ask a co-worker with a pile of work on his desk to pound one out for me

They should just ask for three references' contact information, up front. That keeps you honest without wasting everyone's time

Me neither. I mean, I'm sure I could probably google it, but I'd rather just feel superior.

You're in a weird quasi academic field though, where letters of reference are common.

no, they're not common. to get in to grad school, they are. fellowships, maybe. but just to apply for a job? not a common requirement at all
