GUYS, two weeks ago I accidentally got change for a 20 at the bar when I paid with a 10. I told the bartender, but I expected something in return. Finally, today I got 5 sandwiches when I only ordered/paid for two at the local Checkers. HOW ABOUT THAT

Going out to dinner in Manhattan tomorrow night w/ some grad school people for someone's birthday. I'm guessing there will be 10ish people at dinner. The restaurant is somewhat pricey, at least by our standards, and I'm already dreading the check portion of the evening. I would gladly sign for paying $20 more than I will owe right now to avoid being a part of the check discussion.

Just splitting it evenly is not on the table?

It's the damn drinks that end up killing you on those things. Then nobody wants to factor in the tip either. Totally hate that shit.

Some people don't drink. Most of the people going will be relatively broke grad students. I dunno.

At least gratuity should be included in the bill. It's really unbelievable how awful people are at recognizing what they owe. I'm just gonna throw in more than I should rounding up to the next $20 and go to the bathroom.

Damn it jersey... That's the best you can do. I've done more than a few years in the industry and we got totally fucked with some of those parties.

tonight my friends a situation on my birthday last year when we went out as a big group and it was two somewhat distinct groups of friends. my roommate's girlfriend almost always grabs the check when we're out and there's almost always some disconnect with coming short of what the total with tip should be. she's either bad at math or bad at tipping or both, but every time we're out, she's got the bill in hand. maybe she's just a control freak. but because of this, apparently my other group of friends felt like they were blamed directly for the bill coming well short of what it was and a handful of us had to pay well over what we owed to make up the difference. i already didn't like her much but she's done a great job of alienating almost every single one of my friends (except her boyfriend). I already rarely see him, but I'm pretty sure when he skips out at the end of this lease we're not going to see each other unless it's by sheer coincidence.
no offense but you are everything that's wrong with America

Pay attention to what the check Nazi orders and gently remind her if the bill comes up short. Preempt her bullshit.

In dire situations,I like to be the check accountant. I get the check and go individually down the line asking what everyone got and telling them what they owe. If they question what I tell them to pay, everyone at the table gets a chance to look at the ball- a true Scarlett Letter experience. Occasionally, someone will conveniently forget how many drinks they ordered. Luckily, there's usually one asshole who remembers how many drinks everyone got.
