Also, UPS/FedEx/DHL charge brokerage fees to clear international packages through customs. When I last checked, they were quite substantial (like $50) and the brokerage fee wasn't included in the shipping price (you get billed for it). If you don't want to pay a brokerage fee, you'd have to pre-arrange customs clearance yourself.

Any of you audiophile types know how to help me here? I have an iMac, which positions the headphone jack, annoyingly, on the back.

I want to be able to easily switch back and forth between speakers and headphones without having to move the iMac and unplug (or plug in) the headphones. The software doesn't seem to be able to differentiate and let me do it that way (pick headphones versus speakers) - any ideas?

for that reason, i've always had computer speakers that had a headphone jack on the speaker itself

Only solution I can find is to own different headphones (bluetooth or USB) - then OSX will let me switch between sources.

imacs are weird like that. I just got some ok headphones with a super-long cord and unplug it and plug it. i can't find a solution.

not really a solution, but you could just get a real cheap 2 or 3 foot headphone extension so that could hang in front and you wouldn't have to reach back every time

That's because the circuit being open/closed is physically handled within the jack itself. When a plug is in the jack (even if just an extension cable sans phones), the headphone circuit is complete and the speaker circuit is open. Vice versa when the plug is out. It's essentially a physical switch.

This illustrates how the plug pushes up the sound contact and seperates it from the speaker contact so the contact is with the plug and not the speaker...

If I woke up this morning with my head sewn to the carpet, I would not been more surprised than I am to have a diagram of the problem. I suspected something like this was going on, but now I know.
