I got a new pair of running shoes yesterday. My feet and legs are much happier now because it's the proper kind of shoe. But I do wonder at what point getting a pair of running shoes became specialized as it is (cushioning/ stability/motion control/neutral). I'm sure serious runners on teams and the like have been getting custom lasts made for better fit for a longer period of time, but now it seems to be widely accepted that to be a runner on more than a casual basis, you can't just buy any old shoe. I wonder when that occurred.

when some woddy-esque marketer discovered that runners will pay a huge premium for "custom" shoes

No doubt marketing has helped the idea flourish, but I do think there is an actual benefit if you do a fair amount of running.
