I'm halfway in between you guys. I think you're more right than they are. I am not sure they've ever met a member of the GOP base, and really have no idea how much they hate McCain. Like really, our base hates him.

Exit poll question for BSG: Would anyone around here have switched their vote from Obama to McCain had he picked Ridge/Lieberman/Romney for the VP slot?

I wasn't going to stay up all night, but when you see a CNN scroll bar that says "WILL.I.AM VIA HOLOGRAM," that'll keep you tuned in. CNN has officially lost its mind, if it had a mind.

You're talking about two different things here from my perspective.

Republicans don't win or when they do win they can't sustain the win when they are half liberals. Why bother voting for Dole or Sununu?

Palin is the opposite.

Dole is a great American. Too bad Republicans can't acknowledge a real hero when they see one.

In my straw poll of friends, I had 2 and maybe a 3rd (who was kinda uncommitted until late) who changed from McCaine to Obama based on the VP selection. I agree with jerseyhoya that that would have caused a bunch of the base to simply stay home, but the flip side is I think it would have drawn votes away from Obama which is better than getting someone to come out.

Would it have been enough? I'd seriously doubt it? Would it have hurt the situation in Congress for the Reps? Possibly.

I have met members of your base, but I don't know if the hatred is as pervasive as you think.

Let's be honest, Republicans lost for the most part because of the multiple failures of the Bush administration, and a crap economy.

I agree. I don't understand the need to blame Palin. I don't think she helped anything, but it's not like we would have won if he picked someone better.

Obama is the first Democrat I've ever voted for, for any office, and I'm 39.

I feel the same way about the Republicans this time that I've felt about Democrats... if you can't run a campaign, you can't run my country.

Would any of these people vote for a Republican ticket that had a pro-choice element?

Not going to spend a whole lot of time going over this because everyone and their mother have opined on it. I went through and wrote down what I thought would be the outcome in each state, and McCain looks to be about five points away nationally to making this interesting.

I have Obama winning the Kerry states, plus VA, OH, FL, IA, NM, NV and CO for 338 electoral votes.

The five closest states I have McCain winning are NC, MO, ND, IN, and GA. The five closest Obama wins are FL, OH, VA, CO, and NV.

I am guessing the popular vote will come in something like 52.5-46-1.5.

I think the election will be called at 11 PM when California closes.

Well, there's always the solace of being right.

Going to bed.

Congratulations Mr. Obama, and congratulations to his supporters. It's been a cold 8 years for you guys, have one one on me. This is a historic achievement for Obama, and for America. Everyone should be proud. Obama is my president now too, and I'm going to try and respect that better than the folks I criticized over the past eight years for not accepting the same thing of Bush. I hope this serves to calm the conspiracy freaks down a bit and works to level out the bitterness and various derangement syndromes.
