Look, my friends, this is the new POLITICS THREAD

Frankly, I think it is likely that Palin will get booed very, very badly when she does this with the likely result that McCain gets a slight poll bump because certain people will feel sorry for her and feel like she was mistreated.

I would think Palin lost her mind, but I'm sure she's been directed to attack like this. I guess the old white guys figure that if they can't keep a black guy from being elected, at least they'll make sure it will be another 20 years before another woman is nominated for one of the big spots.

Seriously, I think she's doing real damage to the feminist movement. Like it or not, I think there will be people who will be less likely to accept a female nominee because of this debacle.

Oh, and the pumpkin girl is cute, though she may be a witch (pumpkin, red hair, bewitching spell on me, etc).

Say Obama wins, or McCain, either way, is healthcare really going to change?

My guess is that SCHIP will be reauthorized along the lines that Congress passed and Bush vetoed--definitely under Obama, probably under McCain. Otherwise I'm hopeful they'll do something to incentivize electronic record-keeping and maybe play with pilot programs to move toward a prevention model--though I don't know what that would look like.

But with the economy in the crapper, I have trouble seeing how they could pay for Obama's plan, and McCain's never would get through Congress anyway.

I doubt either's plan would get through congress.

Well, one of the best arguments for substantial healthcare reform is it would produce savings, particularly in the long-term. For instance, it might be cheaper long-term to make sure every person has health coverage than for the desperate, uninsured and truly ill to turn to ERs in every case. Such cases cannot be turned away and must get paid for somehow. How - public money, of course, except for the rare instances where the patient can afford to pay some or all of the freight.

Likewise, another facet of true reform would be an emphasis on preventive care - spend some now to hopefully prevent or at delay more expensive and serious conditions.

A true reformer would make these and other similar arguments - we'll see if the next president is a real reformer. Regardless of the current state of the economy, long-term we stand to benefit if we fix the healthcare system and address the long-term financial health of Social Security and Medicare.

It's not as if the current health system is (a) cost-effective, (b) the best, broadest use of all our advances or (c) a good deal for employers who provide health insurance. Even though it might shake up the market, true healthcare reform eventually would benefit the economy in a number of ways.

You guys are nuts. She's dressed like a house marm and is wearing dark blue jeans that button up above her belly button. She's a nerd, probably a mormon.
