McCain was comparing who voted for what, he said something to the effect of "Guess who didn't vote for it" then pointed to Obama and said "that one" then referreed to himself and said "I did" or something to that effect.

It would have made lyrical sense if he pointed to Obama and said "that one", then pointed to himself and said "this one" but because he didn't, it just sounded awkward. And it gave hysterical pundits the opportunity to spin that racially (it was clearly dismissive but mostly just sloppy).

During a discussion about energy, McCain punctuates a contrast with Obama by referring to him as "that one," while once again not looking in his opponent's direction (merely jabbing a finger across his chest). That's not going to win McCain any Miss Congeniality points. Nor will it reassure any voters who believe McCain is improperly trying to capitalize on Obama's "otherness."

This goes beyond refusing to look at Obama in the first debate. With this slightly dehumanizing phrase, McCain may have just played into the emerging narrative of Obama-hate that has been sprouting at McCain-Palin rallies.

I don't think McCain's "that one" statement came across as racial (although it's obviously going to be portrayed that way be many) -- I thought it just made him look like a grumpy old man. It totally sounded like something my grandpa would say

Hey TV - does this answer your question about whether or not to watch the debate? I mean, this thread has turned into a discussion about Mad Men (which is worth watching if you DVRd THAT).

McCain gestured and moved around oddly, I thought, but it can't be easy carrying the chained ghost of Dubya.

Maybe I'm just playing devil's advocate - I try to put my own feelings aside as best I can when watching debates, etc. - I have to say the McCain I saw last night largely is someone I'd be okay with as president. Unfortunately, like "compassionate conservative" George W. Bush, I'm not sure I believe we'd get a President McCain who would follow thru on the things he said last night.

I thought his mortgage plan sounded great, and it was heartening that he'd apparently consider Warren Buffett for Treasury Secretary. Why and if Buffett would want the job, even in an Obama administration, is another question. But I'll bet it would be a good day in the market if Buffett was nominated.

General consensus seems to be Obama won. He certainly didn't lose. But a bit of tightening in the national polls now would not surprise me. I found McCain reassuring.

FWIW, a columnist in the Baltimore Sun this morning said McCain's worst moment was when he took a question from an African-American man on what the financial bailout would mean for him (the questioner). The Sun columnist said McCain's answer (insinuating the guy probably had never heard of Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac) was talking down to the guy - and maybe the audience. The columnist also said McCain walked closer to pretty much every questioner as he addressed him/her but not this questioner - he wondered if that would play poorly with blacks. (Not that McCain has much to lose there.)

Yeah - you know in the rehersal he was supposed to say "Many Americans never heard of..." and flubbed it. I winced.

I wasn't aware there had been a rehearsal. Obama and McCain knew what the questions would be?

Wow, talk about a variance in the national polls. Of five for today, two have Obama at or near a popular vote landslide, one has Obama up six. The other two have the race basically deadlocked.

From Talking Points Memo:

10/8: Gallup Pres-Tracker: Obama 52%, McCain 41%

10/8: Zogby Pres-Tracker: Obama 47%, McCain 45%

10/8: Hotline/Diageo Pres-Tracker: Obama 45%, McCain 44%

10/8: Rasmussen Pres-Tracker: Obama 51%, McCain 45%

10/8: Res. 2000 Pres-Tracker: Obama 51%, McCain 41%

Don't be that guy. Do you think McCain didn't have a memorized chunk of talking points to discuss that issue in case it came up?
