Watched Barack v. Bill part 1.

O'Reilly is like that friend you get in arguments with that just constantly cuts you off when you are trying to make a point but somehow this friend has a TV Show.

I thought Barack gave thoughtful answers and conducted himself well. He did seem to get frustrated that he couldn't get his whole point on a few occasions.

His answer about the surge I though was well crafted. He said basically something along the lines that the violence is down but the Iraqis still have not taken ownership so in a real sense it has not accomplished what he wishes it to have accomplished.

Stuck, didn't you know it's a dust bowl out there?

Really? It's rained like three days straight here.

Anyway, I don't think things are all that bad. My basic frame of reference is the Phillies.

If the Phils are your frame of reference, then fighting over a peach pit in a dumpster isn't all that bad.

Sorry if this has been covered (I don't have the time or temperament to read this whole thread right now), but a few people asked about Obama's community service. I watched a special on CNN about Obama and it covered this time in his life more than anything else I've seen. I forget the name of it, but they had a similar special about McCain (I only caught the last 10 minutes, but plan to watch it if I see it again).

Anyone know what I'm talking about? Anyway, I'd recommend it. It filled in a lot of holes for me.

Maybe it's on youtube or something.

Here they are:

"Obama Revealed" and "McCain Revealed"

CNN page about the special reports.

They'll be shown again this weekend....

Watch "McCain Revealed" followed by "Obama Revealed" on CNN on Saturday September 6 and Sunday September 7, starting at 7 p.m. ET, with replays at 11 p.m. and 3 a.m.

And it looks like Obama's segment is on youtube, broken into a bunch of parts. No sign of McCain's.

my lil opinion: mccain tried to be a moderate democrat with last night's speech except that he supports a lot of republican policies

Yes, Sarah Palin did graduate from University of Idaho in 1987- after she attended Hawaii Pacific University (fall 1982), North Idaho College (spring and fall 1983), Univ of Idaho (fall 1984, spring 1985), and Matanuska-Susitna College (fall 1985)

Oh, and
There was no indication any of them were contacted as part of the background investigation of Palin by presidential candidate John McCain's campaign.

I'm not knocking her time as a sports reporter. I just think if she is going to rip Obama's experience as a community organizer, its fair game to analyze what she was doing at the same time.

A far more troubling clip:

As far as McCain's speech last night goes, it was good, if not a little tired sounding. McCain wasn't going to energize anyone with that speech, but I don't think he wanted to. He needed to show the softer, gentler, non-partisan side of the ticket, and he did.

I like John McCain. I liked him more eight and even four years ago, but I still like and respect him. I might have even given him a serious chance if he didn't select a running mate who believes the war in Iraq is a "task from God" and wants intelligent design taught in school. The more I think about it, I believe the Palin choice is going to come back to bite him hard. I know the VP is not supposed to have much influence but I believe it will this year.

Usually the VP doesn't have a big impact because nobody usually worries all that much about the president not making it through their term. And most VP picks are pretty reasonable/safe/predictable/whatever. When you are potentially going to be one of the oldest presidents ever, with a troublesome medical history, you probably shouldn't be picking someone who is relatively inexperienced, seems to have controversial positions on almost every viewpoint she actually has expressed, and apparently is very divisive given the responses to her speech.

Haven't the republicans been down this road before? I recall Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp and Bruce Springsteen having problems with their songs being used in politics.

Yes. Amazingly most rock stars are not Republicans, and replaying Ted Nugent songs gets old. I don't get the legalities of it, but it doesn't make all that much sense to me that the artists would have any say over who plays their song.

I guess using it in a commercial would be a big no-no for copyright protection but I guess they cant tell them to not play their song at a party or gathering even if it's televised. Maybe they just want to be on record that they dont support the candidate?

Intellectual property. Yeah, it's selectively enforced, but that's partly the point.
