I don't know if he should have been calling Kilpatrick a "great mayor", but this speech took place before any criminal charges were levied and before the text-messaging scandal broke. I don't see what is wrong with their friendship. Before his mayoral problems, I don't believe Kilpatrick had any knocks on his record in the Michigan legislature. And to be fair, the DNC barred him from the convention and Obama advised him to resign.

These ads come across as somewhat racist, whether or not that was their intent.

Okay, let's bring up all the shady characters McCain has said nice things about but has nothing to do with in regards to their crimes.

this happened 16 months ago, or roughly the same time that sarah palin's political career rose to something higher than the mayor of a town of 6000 people.

and yeah, trt is right, find me a politician who has done anything who isn't connected to someone who turned out to be a scumbag?

That was the weirdest 9/11 'tribute' video I've ever seen.

Rizzo was NOT a great mayor.

The guy had a miserable first term as mayor as well, it was an absolute joke he was reelected, and Obama shouldn't have put himself in the situation to ever call him a great mayor. I don't think it has much (any) bearing on how Obama would do as president, but I think it has the potential to be an effective ad. I hope this group has money to actually advertise in Michigan. I was just looking through FEC filings, and I don't see them actually spending money on it.

I don't think Rizzo was a great mayor, but was he ever tied to corruption? True story--I eerily predicted Rizzo's death.

Kilpatrick is about as unpopular among Michigan residents who live outside Detroit as George W. Bush would be at a dinner party at dajafi's apartment attended by P-t-K and Dennis Kucinich.

He's been this unpopular for most the 7 years he's been mayor. That Obama said this only a year ago, before his latest scandal, the one that finally broke the camel's back, is not an excuse that would fly.

The guy did nothing and was all about patronage in regards to city jobs and money. Horrible mayor. Philadelphia would've been TONS better if a guy like Sam Katz was elected early on, or elected 5 years ago. Now at least Nutter is in there with SOME freaking sense. The absolute dearth of the mayors of Philly to actually run the city for the past 50 years has been pathetic. Rendell and ? Rendell was even lucky that the 90s swept EVERY city up in its prosperity. Sometimes the problem with having a strong mayor system is that you get complete boneheads in there who have no idea how to run any department or know how to handle the budget. Street was terrible too.

I think for a Detroit mayor to be effective, he'd have to be disliked by those who live immediately outside the city.

Lord knows I don't want Nutter appeasing Philly suburbanites and Detroit's issues are more severe.

FWIW, Kilpatrick was disliked outside Detroit BEFORE any charges, before his first term, etc. People just didn't like him in the suburbs.

housh - Nutter IS liked, though.
