Again, I'm not sure any of those songs really suit the occasion.

If I'm programming music for the Republican convention, the first thing I'd do is make sure to play nothing that might get Republicans thinking they could dance.

I'd also play mostly music by dead composers, so they won't complain about their music being misused. Copland's 3rd symphony, stuff by Elvis, and so forth. Maybe throw in a show tune or two. South Pacific is always good.

i actually don't buy that. i can't call him an average man simply because of his extraordinary biography, but he's not at all an elitist.

he just isn't that smart, he has no control over his party, his campaign, or anyone really. and he shows signs of being senile. at best.

he should be unelectable by the end of this campaign. the fact that he's now trying to co-opt obama's platform should open him up to some scathing attacks (mccain: the change 8 years wasn't good enough to bring, mccain: i voted with the president 90% of the time, mccain: hey you kids, get off my 7 lawns!!!)
if you don't know what the wrestlers are trying to do--how certain moves and holds are supposed to work and so forth, then it might just look like too sweaty guys rolling around on a mat.

Oh. I'm replying to a Steagles post. Um. OK.

I don't really like the Obama campaign e-mails that have the tone of an old college buddy.

Your post indicates you aren't, so why would they assume you were? That McCain led the committee which investigated the Abramoff scandal? That from 2003-2006 he was one of the most liberal Republican Senators always scoring with Collins, Snowe, Specter, and Chaffee. Or that McCain spent years sparring with Rumsfeld over the mismanagement of the Iraq War? That McCain consistently voted against big Republican spending bills even when doing so would open him up to attacks that he didn't support veterans or building levees? He missed over half the votes in 2007 and most of them in 2008. He didn't even vote "Present." So no, he doesn't remember the voting record the DNC is making up.

There was a list a few years back of "conservative rock anthems" or something like that--not comprised of bands with right-wing views, but songs whoever put it together (probably one of the younger writers at National Review or Weekly Standard) thought articulated their views and were cool.

The four I remember from the list are "Taxman" (Beatles), "Won't Get Fooled Again" (Who), "Bodies" (Sex Pistols) and "This Night Has Opened My Eyes" (Smiths).

"Rime of the Ancient Mariner," by Iron Maiden

Although he was a pilot, McCain was in the Navy :o :o :o

BTW, "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" is a cool song, albeit 14 minutes long... (sample preview). But if they were gonna pick an Iron Maiden song, I'm kinda surprised it wasn't "Where Eagles Dare" (sample preview). A band I was in during college used to cover "Where Eagles Dare" (yes, I used to be able to play that 8-) ... no idea if I still can cuz I'm old and decrepit :o). For the drummers out there, here's a Youtube from a Nicko McBrain clinic.

That was the worst music article ever written when it came out, and now it just makes me angry.

Even Lynyrd fucking Skynyrd wrote a song about the evils of gun rights. Find me a conservative rock band that doesn't suck and I'll bake you a fucking apple pie.

It wasn't reported by the press but the RNC diverted their buses from freeways because people were throwing rocks, sandbags, and other projectiles at the vehicles. I'm sure the fascist cops were responsible.

You're a piece of work Lax. Like most conservatives and the media that seems to legitimize them, you point to a couple random examples to size up the entire scenario. The cops went in to houses where no crime had been committed storm tropping to take pre-emptive action? Is this America? I guess not. Journalists with deep creds like Amy Goodman were arrested with no explanation. People giving felony charges. Inteviews with beat cops who sounded like wild animals foaming at the mouth to get em some hippie protestors. Protest areas in cages.

It was wrong in NYC 4 years ago and its wrong now, Denver and MinnStPaul. Most protestors are not throwing rocks. We have a right to express ourselves and to organize and protest and question leaders and power-brokers. Cops are out of control, and so are the municipallities. You interview a cop in charge and he passes the buck to someone else. "I'm just following orders..." Sound familiar... that's what half the Nazi's said... it's what most oppressors henchman and troops say. This is the biggest story to me.

I don't condone violence or stoning buses in this instance, but the crimes against the majority of peaceful and rightfully assembled protestors AND THE MEDIA who were in there monitoring it, like Eye Witness Video, etc... it's OUTRAGEOUS.

Olberman, and O'Reilly are joke compared to the real journalists out there trying to defend the constitution.

Whatever bro, get your priorities straight... then maybe I can take you seriously.

The NYT has a story today about Palin's religious views, starting with this exchange between the politician and her pastor:

He wrote back that she should read again from the Old Testament the story of Esther, a beauty queen who became a real one, gaining the king’s ear to avert the slaughter of the Jews and vanquish their enemies. When Esther is called to serve, God grants her a strength she never knew she had.

Mr. Riley said he thought Ms. Palin had lived out the advice as governor, and would now do so again as the Republican Party’s vice-presidential nominee.

“God has given her the opportunity to serve,” he said. “And God has given her the strength to carry out her goals.”
...
Interviews with the two pastors she has been most closely associated with here in her hometown — she now attends the Wasilla Bible Church, though she keeps in touch with Mr. Riley and recently spoke at an event at his former church — and with friends and acquaintances who have worshipped with her point to a firm conclusion: her foundation and source of guidance is the Bible, and with it has come a conviction to be God’s servant.

“Just be amazed at the umbrella of this church here, where God is going to send you from this church,” Ms. Palin told the gathering in June of young graduates of a ministry program at the Assembly of God Church, a video of which has been posted on YouTube.

“Believe me,” she said, “I know what I am saying — where God has sent me, from underneath the umbrella of this church, throughout the state.
...
In the address at the Assembly of God Church here, Ms. Palin’s ease in talking about the intersection of faith and public life was clear. Among other things, she encouraged the group of young church leaders to pray that “God’s will” be done in bringing about the construction of a big pipeline in the state, and suggested her work as governor would be hampered “if the people of Alaska’s heart isn’t right with God.”

Didn't we try this one before? She's wholly entitled to her beliefs, of course--I just don't want them running my government.

The worst thing about the Palin pick, I'm coming to believe, is that it puts us right back in 2004 where the election isn't primarily contested on whose policy views are supported by the public, but rather on who is Righteous and who is Wicked. To say this isn't good for America is a pretty tremendous understatement--even before you think about what it could mean to have a religious fanatic of little experience or adult supervision potentially facing down Iran or Russia if McCain's health failed.

Just as she is entitled to her beliefs, I'm entitled to believe she is an absolute whackjob for her beliefs.

I can completely understand why intelligent, thoughtful people would vote for John McCain.

I cannot fathom, for a single second, any reason why any intelligent, thoughtful person who wasn't already voting McCain would now vote for him because of the selection of Palin. I defy anyone to provide me a legitimate, non-assinine reason for this.
I know what you're asking yourself and the answer is yes. I have a nick name for my penis. Its called the Octagon, but I also nick named my testes - my left one is James Westfall and my right one is Doctor Kenneth Noisewater.
