Wasn't that just yesterday? Happy Birthday, btw. And happy almost birthday to Vox.

A college relationship that lasts much beyond college is pretty tough. There's so much to balance once you graduate--where you live, jobs, grad school, changing attitudes towards dealing with being an adult are only a few of the major landmines. They can be negotiated, but you have to be committed to doing so, and one or both of you need to be pretty flexible in your plans. I've seen it work, but more often it doesn't.

The problem is for many people, the immediate years after college graduation can be lonely and uncertain, so you may want to cling to something that's familiar and safe, at the expense of getting on with your life.

In four years of college, I had a total of six roommates/housemates. We all graduated in 1996. Three of those six are still happily married to the girls they were with then. The girl I dated for close to two years covering sophomore into senior years, is still married to the guy she got with after we broke up, another guy we went to school with. In my close circle of friends, there are at least two or three more that are still married to girls from college. Not a divorce in the whole group. Pretty amazing, really.

I've got way too much crap on my plate right now. A job I'm trying to put in extra time at every day, demands from a book publisher that are clearly going to become overwhelming before too long, and a pending return to grad school pending completion of an undergraduate economics class (apparently the A I got in my Principles of Microeconomics class isn't enough to satisfy their general undergraduate economics requirement) not to mention having to take the stupid GMAT. Add nice weather, baseball, a bar downstairs, and constant random distractions and it looks like I'm going to have to get really serious about time management, something I've never really had to give much concern. That sucks. I like being carefree and I'm afraid I'm going to have to give up that lifestyle, at least for the next several months.

I don't know if the "still married" thing is remarkable in the < 10 years category. 30 years, yeah. Ten is still in that window.

Median duration of a marriage that ends in divorce is ~7.5 years.

I got a call yesterday that my grandma was rushed to the hospital and they didn't think she would make it through the day. I left work and drove out to see her at AC medical center yesterday and I got to talk to her for a few minuets, she wasn't able to talk back to me, she was trying but couldn't get the words out. She still alive this morning, but not doing well at all, she has pneumonia, which she got after being in a nursing home rehabbing 2 broken shoulders and a broken hip for the past 7 weeks. Her leg was almost healed enough to walk, which would have meant she could go home, or at least assisted living, but this damn pneumonia got in her lungs and now she's going to go... It's not fair, why does it have to be like that.

So I'm feeling you Phight, I've never known life with out my mom-mom, she's always been there for me and now...

First and foremost, I'm sorry for your grandmother's condition, and I'm hoping for a recovery, but from what you're saying, it doesn't look good; so, I am sorry for your prospective loss. Not really sure how to express sympathy in a situation like this, other than - I'm sorry.

Be glad that you have had her this long. I lost my last grandparent when I was 22, and my dad last year. I'm 35. My wife lost her dad 6 years ago. She's 34.

My mother in law passed recently. Lil' Vulture decided a couple of days ago that she needed to do something as a kind of memorial. I think she realizes that needs something so that she can remember her grandmother. So, she wrote a little biography about her grandmother, and noted that she like and my daughter liked to do crafts together. It was very touching.

As of 6 or 7 years ago, I was fortunate enough to have a great-grandmom on my mom's side, a great-grandmom on my dad's side, my grandmom pictured above (who my brother and I also called mom-mom), a step grandmom, a step-grandpop, and both of my dad's parents. Now I only have both of my dad's parents left. My grandpop has to be one of the strongest 79 year olds around. He's always doing crazy shit like going up on the roof and cleaning the gutters and working on cars, all kinds of stuff. This has been a bad year and a half for my grandmom as she developed a bad blood clot in her leg and has had pneumonia (and been hospitalized) 5 times since Dec 06 because she had to stay off of the leg. Right now she is doing pretty good but pneumonia is a bitch.

All I can say is I really hope she pulls through but if it is her time to go I hope it's as peaceful and pain-free as possible. Hold her hand and tell her that you love her and not to be afraid.

Stay strong, folks. Dealing with these things can be very tough, but it's all part of life. It's so much easier and better to focus on the good times you've had with these people than it is to dwell on things you cannot control.

I've mentioned it here before, but it's a comprehensive examination of the films of Alfred Hitchcock with a specific focus on his artistic development as a director from the beginning of his career through the end. It's a 52 chapter book which covers 51 movies plus 17 episodes of Alfred Hitchcock Presents, all of which were directed by Hitchcock. There are a ton of books out there on Hitchcock, but, as best as we can tell, none have quite the scope and focus that this book has. None of the other so-called "definitive Hitchcock books" devote entire chapters to his lesser-known works from his early career. It will be unique.
