Not really. In fact, I'm far more likely to see the painting in Philly than up in NW Arkansas.

What is interesting though is that this is statewide news here, but I doubt it merits much of a mention in Philly, much less PA. I'm not sure, but wasn't the painting bought from Thomas Jefferson University, which did not have it displayed prominently, and only then, did some in Philly realize they were about to lose something really special?

I guess my read on it will be pretty warped, because it was a HUGE deal for the museum community. They even asked all of us employees if we could chip in personally to help out. The American Art and Development Departments were total warzones in the two months after the announce of the sales, begging every big donor and looking for any possible grants to help them get the loot together. All other departments were on order to prioritize support for them.

Outside of the museum, there was definitely a lot of news coverage with a handful of front page Inquirer articles, including yesterday's paper. I can't say if Joe Kensington gave a crap or not, but it was a pretty big deal throughout the center city, youth, and arts communities.

I think it was displayed prominently, it's just that people don't think to stop and admire a painting at a medical college. The thing with the original sale was that no one at any of the Philly museums ever thought that Jefferson would go that route in order to raise funds for renovations. It was pretty shocking news the day it was announced for auction; the PMA and PAFA had always assumed that they would be approached first behind closed doors in the event of the work going on sale and they don't keep 50 million dollar coffers in contingency for that kind of thing.

In any event, it's an interesting story. Someone should write a book on the whole affair. Lots of colorful personalities involved, and the whole Wal-Mart v. Philadelphia Museum of Art would make comic contrasts.
