"It's going to be a little different every year," said Schwartz. "Next year it'll be different than this year. Two years from now it'll be different because we'll have different players. I think the coach's job is to find the best position to put those players in. The common denominators you'll see, traditionally, we're going to be tough. We're going to be physical. We're going to attack. We're going to put pressure on the quarterback. I think those are the things that carry over from year to year, as sort of our starting point."

Schwartz noted that his scheme will fit the players.

"I looked at the players," said Schwartz. "I looked at just about every game Philadelphia played last year. I remember playing these guys a bunch of times, and looked at a lot of these players coming out of college, and that was part of the attraction here. I think we really have some good defensive players. I think we can help them out, put them in maybe in a little bit different position and emphasize their strengths a little bit more."

So Ertz/Celek/Lane get extensions before Fletcher. Racism is another thing Chip left behind

Forgive the stupid question but do we have the depth at linebacker for the 4-3?

Yes... we actually may have too many parts right now.

WLB: Kendrick and Alonso
MLB: Ryans and Hicks
SLB: Barwin (may go to DE)

Graham and Smith (if he isn't cut) move to DE with Curry if he is resigned.

Ryans gotta be out I think. As great as Hicks was last year, wonder if his transition will be as seamless to a 4-3 mike playing behind a one gap front vs playing behind 2 gapperz

Hicks was my favorite player last year. I'm rooting for him hard this season.

Assuming Ryans is cut and they aren't planning to keep guys like Najee Goode, Travis Long and Steven Means, they're actually short on LBs. Braman will still be around for another season but he's pretty much special teams. They'll need a backup SLB and possibly another MLB if Alonso moves to weakside

Philly the Kid wrote:PSUEagles - what's your take on Atl and Balti after big mega-contracts to Ryan and Flacco? Did it prevent them from filling other holes?

Without our 2nd round pick, do we even have a chance to move up and get a kid like Wentz?

My take is that ATL has struggled because Dimitroff hasn't done a good enough job drafting in the last 5+ years (check the Falcons' record there: it's bad) in addition to the large amount of money he and Julio Jones command.

The Ravens are a stronger organization, but they too haven't hit on enough high draft picks to adequately replace all of their older stars on defense they've lost the last few seasons. Flacco's overpaid, but it's not an egregious overpay IMO since I consider him a Top 10 QB.

Unless you have an uber-elite QB like Rodgers or Luck you have to do well in the draft in order to sustain success. The reality, of course, is that the law of averages says that doing so is extremely hard: the NFL is a socialistic enterprise designed to promote parity (probably the only time I've ever considered socialism a good idea in any context lol).

No to your second question.

Caplan just said most of the people he talked to at the Senior Bowl think the Eagles have an above-average roster and were poorly coached last year

So Chip-as-GM wasn't the problem? Maybe not, but the way he ignored OL depth and WR talent had a lot to do with it IMO. I do think our defense was more than capable, talent wise, and luckily most of them are back regardless of the Howienomics

Kempski's Eagles mock 2.0:

1 = Lynch
3a = Kenneth Dixon (Louisiana Tech RB)
3b = Josh Garnett (Stanford OG)
4 = Le'Raven Clark (Texas Tech OT)
5a = Cardale Jones
5b = Javon Hargrave (South Carolina State DT)
6 = James Bradberry (Samford CB)
7a = Isaac Seumalo (Oregon State C/G)
7b = Quinton Jefferson (Maryland DT)
