He's very very hittable, not the kind of guy I want as a starter even if he comes relatively cheap. Low-ish K rate, high hit rate, and already a low walk rate. If he had a high-ish BB rate, I might be interested because I could say he might improve if he improves his control, but that's not the case. He's most likely already had his best year. Maybe he would be better as a reliever, but I don't think relief pitching is a problem.

RealKen: Dodgers are going to regret not trading for Hamels

The D-backs will pay Greinke an average of $34.33 million annually. The Rangers, because of the way they structured their trade with the Phillies, will pay Hamels slightly more than $13 million annually for the next three or four years, depending upon whether they exercise his option.

That, in baseball's new math, is practically J.A. Happ money.
.
.
The Dodgers, according to sources, would not part with any of their top three youngsters -- center fielder Joc Pederson, third baseman/shortstop Corey Seager, lefty Julio Urias -- and also wanted significant cash in the deal.
.
.
Why couldn't the Dodgers have put their trade capital to better use, building a package around prized righty Jose De Leon, piling on other prospects and taking on the entirety of Hamels' remaining obligation?

Rangers deal was always going to be better without any of the dodgers top guys.

Dodgers might need to get their baseball computer looked at. Might be broke.
Teams lie, sometimes for good reasons, sometimes for bad. They do it to get an advantage while they look at the trade market or just because they can

So I've never been a huge Zobrist fan, but he's been pretty consistent and he plays a couple of positions that are unsettled for us. I wonder if he'd come here for fewer years with a higher AAV. I wouldn't want to keep him long term, but he's so versatile that a playoff bound team with an injury at 2B, 3B, OF, or maybe even SS might give up a nice prospect for him, especially if we use our deep pockets to eat some of the contract in the trade. Assuming he's the same guy he's been the past 5-6 years, I bet we could trade him and get something of value.

Signing a 34 year old to a 4 year contract so you can eat some of the money to trade for a prospect doesn't seem like a good plan.

yeh, probably not, but I was thinking a 2 year deal with high $$ per year. It's being done with pitchers, so I was trying to extend it to a versatile every day player.

fwiw the three rule 5 possibility steaks names in his winter meetings preview are bowman, devenski, and geoddel.
he also names cesar ramos of the angels as yet another possible waiver wire pitching target.

Alden_Gonzalez
One potential trade target to monitor: Phillies LHH 3B/LF Cody Asche. They want pitching. Angels could part with Gott, Morin or Bedrosian.

All three are 24 and on the 40-man roster

I like Asche but it doesn't seem like he has a clear role on this team. If we can get a solid pitcher for him, I'm in.

So he was basically outrighted from Reading and promoted to LV, clearing another spot for Rule V
