I turn my head and then Eickhoff? Phillies random thoughts

we don't really care about spirit of the rule, so I guess it's legal. But we all know what happened. O'Sullivan pitched the 12th; he could've been sent down the 13th. They waited 2 days so they could play a second baseman at 3B and safely get under the clock.

What is the spirit of the rule? This isn't like a new thing. Teams have been doing this for years. The players have been agreeing to it in the cba for years. His grievance should be with the players association giving this up in exchange for something else.

that's not how grievances work.

the spirit of the rule is that when a player is ready for hte major you bring them up; waiting a few days to delay the clock goes against this spirit. yes, it happens all the time; doesn't make it right.

players agreed to it, sure. but leaders negotiated it and those with no power base within the union were required to go along. this is like when NBA players forget they too were once on rookie contracts. a union is to fight for all members, not just ones with power.

It's so nice to have a GM who builds up his players.

the player's association doesn't give two shits about minor leaguers or draftees. obviously, this is important to those players and their agents who lose out on a year's pay day. that group wields a decent amount of power and they had to take a stand now to get the conversation started for the next pay day. nothing is going to come of it, but they had to get something on record.

Right, which is why his real beef is with the union.

This seems like an obvious result of setting the rule like this. Everyone had to know that teams would do this.

This is the whole point of a collective bargaining agreement. You make some calls so that you aren't litigating the obvious stuff every time someone gets screwed by it.

What do you propose as an alternative? You either have a threshold for free agency, or you do not. Whatever the threshold is, players will sometimes fall just short of the threshold. Teams will sometimes manipulate callups to take advantage of that. Sometimes it will be obvious (Bryant), sometimes less obvious. Sometimes they'll do it and we won't even realize it!

Mack says it's likely Herrera works out at second but he considers him the incumbent for CF.
