PG could just be talking nice to set Rub up for a post Phillies job. If "new" ownership and a new president want to come in and show they are changing the way the do business, you've gotta pretty much clean house, especially Amaro. He is to emblematic of the old regime and you hear the national guys talk about how little respect Ruben has around the league it's hard to believe there's not at least a little fire to go with that smoke.

I could see him being a fit in Seattle. Owner doesn't want to rebuild.

Can't believe he's only 59. Anyway, here's an interesting article about him

Yeah he has been around forever. I can't imagine the Orioles firing him but if they do he would be #1 on my list. He is a great guy and a really good coach. Eventually he is going to stop touching things up and complete the job. He would have done what Torre did if he accepted Steinbrenner's offer, IMO. Or maybe he is really just a guy to straighten things out. He was one of my favorite analysts also. He adapted to the modern era a while back.

official: Dom has a concussion

Also with Franco likely done for the year, Asche will start at 3B for most of the remaining schedule

Probably one of the best baseball minds out there, however a total micro manager and kind of a jerk. You can tolerate his antics if you're winning, but the second his team's start to go backward he's gone. He was hated in Arizona from the players, to the front office, to the clubhouse manager, to even the damn ball boys. MacPhail hired him in Baltimore and chose to retire a year later. He can jump start a rebuild though and if the Phillies could add a top of the rotation starter and good outfielder, I feel he can guide the Phillies to 85 wins and sniff a wild card berth.

I don't see any way the Phillies get to 85 wins. We're going to lose 100 this year, and we're going to have earned them.

We have a gigantic pitching issue going into next year, in that we'll have about 160 innings of Nola, who should be average to a bit better, and probably about the same of Morgan, who probably won't be. We need to get 600+ innings of starting pitching, from acquisitions and rookies, which means we need to plan for about 800 of them, with pitcher attrition. Even if you give Eickhoff 150, we've got a lot of looking and hoping to do.

This offense is improving, but it's got a long way to go. We'll likely be below average offensively, and way below average on the mound next year. But if we use the time, and our resources, properly, we could be in a good position to make a leap into contention in 2017.

Or maybe our proprietary computer system will identify the location of good pitchers, and we'll win it all next year.

mostly agree with shore. the possibility of 85 wins in 2016 seems only slightly more realistic to me than to him because i think there is enough young talent near the top of the system that it's not ridiculously unlikely to get a high enough breakout/bust ratio to reach 85 wins. agree that pitching is the biggest problem, both because there is less talent and because pitchers are riskier in the first place.
a winning record in 2016 would require just about everything going right for nola, eickhoff, asher, eflin, lively, thompson, and morgan... and for most of the young hitters too. all we want out of a manager in 2016 is someone who will give playing time and experience to the right guys and not push anyone (e.g. franco, araujo) to play hurt and not abuse the young arms (e.g. nola).

by 2017 more of the elite hitters will be in or on the cusp of their prime years, and on the pitching side, pinto, eflin, lively, thompson, the 1.1 draft pick, and kilome and a couple of long shots should be enough to turn into two or three extra major league ready arms to join with more experienced, older, and stronger versions of nola and eickhoff and enough to justify acquiring an ace from the outside to anchor the rotation.
with all of the young arms and bats added this season, i think it's crazy for folks to be asking for a big-name fa pitcher signing this offseason (that idea seems to be everywhere over at tgp) instead of keeping the powder dry and preserving the option of trading a few young guys blocked by even better young guys for somebody else's version of the hamels contract sometime in 2017, rather than the bigger, longer term, and riskier gamble of signing a free agent ace. even amaro has proven able to trade prospects for an affordable ace.
