It's supposedly revocable waivers so they can pull him back. Since his '16 option won't vest, Cotts has him as anywhere between $5MM-$11MM for next season based on # of days on the DL. Anyone have an idea of the sliding scale? The Phils would have to pay him a $2MM buyout if he doesn't vest and we don't pick up the option I believe (per Cotts).

I thought the DL conditional was based on his knee. This was his ankle

I hoped he would just retire after the season, but that ain't Chase. He's gonna die on the field, or worse, on the bench. I'd rather that happen somewhere else, I guess. Just please, not the fucking Giants.

I thought so, too, and maybe he will. But he's looked very good over the past few days.

Yeah I remember it like that too, but I'm having trouble finding that detail anywhere. I'll keep looking.

Ah, here we go. The knee injury clause was for his 2015 bonus. It does not appear to be in the DL clause for the 2016 bonus.

http://www.thegoodphight.com/2013/8/9/4604332/breaking-down-chase-utleys-new-deal

The base deal:

$15,000,000 guaranteed salary in 2014
$10,000,000 guaranteed salary in 2015
$5,000,000 BONUS in 2015 if He is not on the DL for more than 15 days with a specified knee condition.
$2,000,000 buyout.

In addition, the vesting options include:
$15,000,000 guaranteed in 2016-2018 provided Utley reaches 500 plate appearances in the preceding season. (something he has not done since 2010)
Should Utley fail to attain those 500 plate appearances, the option would revert to a conditional CLUB option between $5,000,000 and $11,000,000 depending on how many days he spends on the DL.

I hope Utley goes to the American league, wins another title, and has a few more good years. Signs with Phils on a 1 day contract to retire as a Phillie. Makes the hall of fame, goes in as a Phillie. Curses during acceptance speech.

I don't see a lot of teams claiming him when he's owed $5 million for 2 months and has a .556 OPS. 2 good games doesn't erase 4 months of bad play. I'd lean towards him going unclaimed. The Dodgers might claim him though because they don't care about money and Kendrick just got hurt. I'm still hoping the Angels get him though.

I could see the Angels or the Yankees being interested. In any case I suspect the money would get worked out for the remainder of this year and next year is a club option anyway.

Did anyone catch this snippet from Heyman a few days ago?

http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/writer/jon ... ther-notes

San Francisco made a nice late run at Cole Hamels, and while Hamels ultimately accepted San Francisco, provided his 2019 option would be exercised, Phillies people told them the acceptance came too late. The Phillies asked for pitching prospect Tyler Beede and young catcher Andrew Susac, among others, though it isn't known what the final offer was

Also
Houston disregarded early word here and elsewhere that Cole Hamels was unlikely to waive his no-trade clause and still made a big play for Hamels, so big that Phillies people are said to have continually checked with Hamels' agent John Boggs about his willingness to go to Houston. The Phillies were excited enough about the Houston offer that, even after telling Boggs he was "tardy" when he relayed the info that Hamels would accept the Giants, Phillies GM Ruben Amaro is still to have asked once again about Hamels and the Astros. The answer on that one was still no. Hamels liked the fact the Astros have become competitive, but they haven't been consistently competitive over the years, the short left field wall is a challenge for lefty pitchers and he doesn't have family friends in the Houston area as he does in the Dallas-Arlington area (where his wife's family resides)

Good writeup on Hernandez and Herrera on Crashburn. It actually made me a bit more excited about Odubel.
