Not to mention the concurrent reports that he's dying to get out of here

The two don't have to be mutually exclusive. Just because he (allegedly) wants to leave doesn't mean he wouldn't try to leverage himself an extra guaranteed year.

I understand that. But the acquiring team on his NTL could call his bluff. Then we'll find out if he really wants to go

If he accepts a trade to a team on his NTL, does that void that clause in his contract going forward?

This is a pretty important offseason. I mean, they're all important, but this one is particularly important. I'm partly excited and partly terrified.

I much prefer this article which suggests we could get Addison Russell from the Cubs if Lester and Scherzer sign elsewhere.

Russell as the headliner of a package would be a pretty great return.

He could play AAA in 2015 and then replace Rollins in 2016. It would allow Crawford more time to develop and then one of them shifts to 2B to replace Utley in 2019 or moves to 3B if Crawford is ready earlier.

If you get Russell and one other very solid prospect (either a pitcher or an OF) along with one flyer prospect (Josh Vitters? Was good in '12/'13 but bad in '14 and is 25), I think that is pretty good.

russell's minor league numbers remind me of rollins. a package headlined by him is one of the very few i can imagine being appropriate return for hamels.

I'm exactly of the opposite mind here. Other than "they're all important", there's not much that can really be done this particular offseason. Not much flexibility, our guys are our guys, nobody else wants them, we're pretty much stuck. Just gotta hope they play like the back of their baseball cards

None of them are important until Ruben and Montgomery are gone.

That sounds almost exactly like last offseason.

I would assume most other boarders share this opinion (and probably have voiced it), but I think Byrd absolutely has to go for best offer this winter. The 5.5% BB/29% K marks from last year are like a flashing TRADE ME NOW sign. If he pulls a hammy or breaks his hamate or whatever in ST, the window for moving him is probably gone. Other teams realize that (which is probably why he stuck around last year), but I still think Byrd is a guy scouts would like a lot, so maybe some of the less SABR-driven orgs who are looking to win now could still be interested.

I could see teams preferring Melky, but that is likely going to require at least 3 years. Also teams are probably scared shitless of Cruz demands now after the year he just had. I would also guess many teams prefer him to Cuddyer because he's a better right fielder and has been healthier recently. His deal, even if it vests is 2-16, vs Cuddyer's 2-21 (backloaded with 12.5mm in 2016). If there was another team in addition to the Mets that was willing to give up the comp pick on Cuddyer, I think they'd give something of value for Byrd. Unfortunately he has that no trade veto to the Ms and KC, who I think are both logical fits. I think LF for the Giants is also a fit, especially if they lose fatty sandoval

Absolutely. Freeing up an outfield spot for someone new (and/or even some Ruf, if Asche and Fracno both earn a spot) outweighs the chances of Byrd being a little more valuable if he's producing into July

Also trade Chooch to the Pirates. They can afford him at 2-17 and he'd be a huge get for them. He's not 2013 Chooch but I think he can still play. I also kinda like the Pirates so I'm cool with rooting for him there
