Someone like Francisco Liriano.

Jeff would start a really awesome thread about how dumb Amaro is and we'd have fun all year.
That would be kewl.
He was 11th in the Cy Young in 2010.
If there's anyone in the top 11 of either league Cy Young balloting from 2011, who has averaged more than a strikeout per inning in 140 starts, and is under 30, that we can sign for like 2 years / $12M, I think Jeff'd be OK with it.

I think you're a little confused by his multiple lines on BBREF - he had a 5.34 ERA in 2012 pitching for two teams (5.31 for MIN and 5.40 for CHW), and a 5.09 in 2011 (MIN). In 2010, he went 14-10, 3.62 ERA, walked 2.7 per 9, whiffed 9.4 per nine, and led the league in fewest homers per 9.
So, he sucked for 2 years, after being pretty damned good the year before. But even when he sucked, he struck out 279 guys in 291 innings. Not every "bad" pitcher is the same, nor do they have equal chances of turning in a "surprise" year.

Yeah. I'm rushing around today and it's tough to concentrate. Anyways he also sucked in 2009 with a 5.80 ERa. He struck out a lot of guys and walked a lot of guys and had a lot of guys on base and was hurt a lot for three out of four years. Not all bad pitchers are the same. But they all have a lot of negatives. A few of them have a good year or two they can surprise you with at some point. Liriano. Vogelsong. There are a few guys like this every year. Very few have much good to say about these guys when they are signed.
The point I made stands. There are guys who suck for a while then do good for a year or two. Some stay good. It would be kewl if we stumbled upon a starter like that for next year.
