I think if you play it as 3 game series all @ Wild Card #1 (giving some reason to actually BE the first wild card as getting home field for a single game doesn't seem like a big deal to me) and play it MON-TUES-WED, then the rest can still start at the same time. Ditch the tiebreaker game like moz said and go off regular season record. If a team is 5-1 versus the team they're tied with, then fuck the other team; play better during the regular season then.
edit: oy vey, this would have not sorted out the Texas-Tampa deal as they, for whatever reason, played 8 games head-to-head and both were 4-4. I guess you could just do it the way the NFL does it and figure out various tiebreakers from there, like overall record in the AL and things like that.
