Yes "I'm very excited to see my first in-person no-hitter" is definitely a totally earnest endorsement. Come on now. I know tone is tough to read on the internet but yeesh.

C'mon guys, never really paid attention to this thread, but what's the point here? I mean, I think I can get the poking fun at wordy prose gig, but aren't the personal insults too much?

Sure but it's a little harder to be discerning when he sincerely wrote the sentence "I'm not optimistic. And you shouldn't be either" at the start of the season

also etched would call his own mother a cunt at her funeral if she was an arsenal fan

I sure would, I'd try to instigate a chant letting the world know too. Fortunately my family is smart enough to not support the scum, we're all yiddos.

Phylan wrote:But like, that's not what this thread is about. If it were "this guy is really wrong about baseball! I think this thing he said is incorrect," that would be one thing, but it has really descended into calling him an asshole and a douchebag and a loser etc., and speculating on his life/personality in a turn for the really creepy and mean-spirited, on phdave's part in particular.

I'm guessing this attitude comes from you, FTN, because every time we have a disagreement about baseball you take it really personally and stop tweeting me altogether, but the way it manifests itself in this thread is really sad.

I don't know what you are talking about. I think I've made one comment in this entire thread about his life/personality and that was trying to figure out an explanation for why he kept comparing hoping for the Phillies to get into the playoffs to wanting to get back together with an ex-girlfriend.

And, really, 90% of what he writes about on a baseball blog is personal. There are many many more personal things he writes that I could put here if all I wanted to do was to attack him personally. I'm not really interested in that.

The most mean spirited thing I've done is to copy and paste what he has actually written. And I agree that is mean spirited. It makes him look very very bad and I can't deny that is what I am aiming for.

Blaming FTN for the tone of this thread because he ignores you on twitter is really weird.

Maybe it's not your fault then, but it's a predictable result of posting like every other sentence he writes in here and taking it all 1000% seriously. The obsessive quality of it all is off-putting.

wait, so now my tweeting habits are on the stand? wtf? i still follow you. you're a good dude. if i didnt like you, i'd unfollow you, like i unfollowed the inspiration for this thread.

half of my tweets are re-tweets from people far funnier than me, one third of them are pictures of moons of saturn, and the rest are about the phillies, mostly defending them from the fucking moronic idiots on twitter who think this organization sucks and always does the wrong thing.

i'll try and say hi to you on twitter every day going forward, so you dont view me not saying hi as some sort of indictment or punishment. i follow 400 people exactly, and i interact with like 5 of them regularly. take a deep breath.

Yeah I think you probably missed the point of that bit but it was probably poorly communicated by me. I'll retract that. I was trying to probe the "different baseball opinions = mad on internet" thing. Especially since I, too, fall prey to it.

This thread is entertaining to me because of what phdave posts. I don't think Baumann's a dumb guy and I think he's got potential to be a good writer, but he's got a very distinct style that makes him prone to mockery--it's not like we're the only ones, judging from his sudden realization that he's the face of the "Phillies won't make the playoffs" side. He's been banging the drum harder than anyone I've seen. But to take this thread as a board-wide assault on his character is wrong. There are hundreds of people here, all with their own flaws ranging from minor to obstructive to occasionally sociopathic but for the most part we're just here to have fun. As far as I know, nobody knows him like you do, so I understand why you'd take it a little more personally than anyone really intends. But I don't think this thread was ever meant to be all that serious. The personal attacks in this thread are pretty much par for the course on anyone we comment on. They're not sincere.

I'm sure etched chaos or somebody will come in and refute this and say he wishes he were dead or something but those kinds of things are as much a joke to everybody else here as they should be to you

see, i dont get "mad on the internet" anymore. i just stop reading what sets me off. if i vehemently disagree with someone about an issue or a series of issues, and i dont think i can learn anything from that person's point of view for whatever reason, the internet easily allows me to simply tune that person out and move on. if i was trying to tune you out, id have just unfollowed you. i assumed that not picking twitter fights with you every time you say something i disagree with would save both of us a lot of trouble.

i'm still on the fence. it would be easy for me to tell everyone to attack. and i know you'd listen. but it may time to lay down our arms. we can't let an internal war overshadow the accomplishments of the team we (most) love.

Anyway I'll get the hell out for another 3 weeks or whatever. Mods please automate my account to post hatersgonnahate.gif on every page, tia. Go Phils.

edit: oh and ONE MORE THING if the Phillies do make the playoffs come to Independence Mall, Baumann and I are sworn to play Rhianna's "Umbrella" on mandolin and banjo and you can post it in this thread and humiliate us or whatever
