Marlon Byrd’s deal includes a club/vesting option for 2016.

Because of course it does

Would be cool to photoshop Amaro in for Nutter and pretend like this is Rube's big catcher signing

I just looked up Raul's career again just for fun. He hit 13 homers at age 29. Not remarkable except that Gave him just 27 for his career. He hit number 300 last year.

Guys like Raul and Byrd give baseball computers headaches.

I suppose it's a decent signing until the soon to be 36 year old Byrd is suspended for PEDs, gets hurt because he is old, or reverts to his norm because he's a marginal MLB player.

i think it's a fair price for a needed piece (rhh with some pop) that doesn't limit any of their other moves. i agree the move is a little early, but i don't think it's an overpay or that amaro set the top of the market, which makes the timing less concerning imo. if they felt like it they could go get matt joyce to platoon with him and get real great production (byrd 165 wRC+/joyce 123) for a reasonable cost. plenty of options yet.

The only part I don't agree with is that it may limit other moves. Maybe it won't, but maybe it will. Too early to tell.

Yeh, those signings pissed me off. This one I just don't get and believe it may hurt their flexibility early in FA.

At this point, I'm mostly just hoping to get rid of Amaro before next season. The worst scenario, imo, is moderate improvement. If they make a serious run at a playoff spot, great, then it will be worth the angst of having Amaro for another year. But if they improve just a little bit to, say, .500, then I'm concerned he'll get more time.

I hope there is a clause in the contract that makes it voidable if he is suspended for PEDs

Are you talking flexibility money wise or player wise? I'm having a hard time thinking that's the case in either scenario.

Last year we signed Michael young! the worst player in baseball; Delmon Young, who was even worse; and a hurt reliefer.

Byrd already is better than all three of those put together. Progress.

Joel Sherman ‏@Joelsherman1 24m

Byrd gets $8M in '14 & '15, vest opt '16 for $8M if 550PA '14 or 1100 14-15 or 600 in '15. If doesn't vest #Phillies hv $8M team option

If he is suspended, it will be for 100 games and they don't have to pay him and the third year won't vest so it's almost as good.

hahah, someone in this thread is complaining because this signing wasn't "creative" enough? what in god's name does that even mean? like, how the waterboy was a creative signing for the sclsu muddogs?

you win by getting decent players at the right price, not via "creativity." you may not like byrd, but there is no way 2/16 is an overpayment for him, and i'm pleased that we have another bat in the outfield. and he can play defense. huzzah.

That has been kind of a mantra around these here parts.

Being creative is something some folks think is effective. And they aren't wrong necessarily. There are some effective, creative solutions to problems. But there are also solutions that are effective that aren't creative and also creative solutions that don't work worth a crap.

I don't care a whit about creativity in building a ball club. Because you build a ball club with good ball players dammit. Don't matter how creative you are whilst doing it.

I guess if Byrd slugs .500 next year we can call this signing creative if we want to.
