Because Byrd gets hurt, I assume? About 3 and half players per team in the majors got 550 PA last year. I'd assume the (pre-BATTS) Phillies candidates are Rollins, Revere, Byrd, and Brown.

I mean, I'm sure even the most optimistic fan (grote) looks at this team and thinks best case scenario is we win the nl east and maybe get hot, no one is looking at Marlon Byrd and saying WORLD SERIES OR BUST FUCKERZZ. As a fan, I am not thrilled with the Byrd signing, or Delmon, MY10 etc. last year and I want amaro gone as much as anyone here, but isn't this supposed to be fun? I mean, I know at best Byrd barely moves the needle, but I'm hoping he can be at least half as valuable as he was and they can make a run. With amaro at the helm, there is no turning this ship around this offseason, I don't see him doing what's necessary to turn the roster over quickly. So if you wanna bitch and moan about how awful each and every signing and trade is, then so be it, over here I'll just be glad we aren't paying Nelson Cruz $15mil/yr into his late 30s and call it a day.

I was responding to Grote implying that I was acting all "everything is ruined forever." .

Can't speak for him, but I'll try anyway. That was him making fun of the attitude of the board in general, not you specifically. The Phillies have sucked the last two seasons, but we've also reacted like a bunch of whiney, entitled Yankee fans about some of the moves. Mind you, signing Delmon and Michael Young will drive a man to drink.

And I do wonder about Amaro's obsession with options. It seems like even Greg Dobbs types get option years.

That has been kind of a mantra around these here parts.

Being creative is something some folks think is effective. And they aren't wrong necessarily. There are some effective, creative solutions to problems. But there are also solutions that are effective that aren't creative and also creative solutions that don't work worth a crap.

I don't care a whit about creativity in building a ball club. Because you build a ball club with good ball players dammit. Don't matter how creative you are whilst doing it.

I guess if Byrd slugs .500 next year we can call this signing creative if we want to.

I don't give a shit about it either. I can't believe I make one post and then everyone ignores every other post I wrote. I thought it was ridiculous/funny that they keep talking about being creative and then they signed Byrd a week into FA. That's all. This whole creative thing came from me being sarcastic in one post.

Have I ever on this board talked about me wanting them to be creative? No, I haven't. That's because I don't care about it. I was just pointing out the gaping difference between what they said they wanted to do and what they did and how quickly they abandoned what they said they wanted to do.

FFS. You guys are worse than my students.

Me: We will have a quiz Thursday on Chapter 4.
Them: What does the quiz cover?
Me: Chapter 4
Them: Does the quiz cover chapter 5?
Me: No, it does not cover chapter 5. It only covers chapter 4.
Them: Why does it cover Chapter 5 when we haven't covered chapter 5?
Me: It doesn't cover Chapter 5, only Chapter 4.
Them: Then why did you say Chapter 5?
Me: Because someone asked if it covered Chapter 5. So I answered them.
Them: So what does the quiz cover?
Me: Chapter 4
Them: I'm confused, is this a quiz or a test. If it's on multiple chapters, it should be a test.
Me: It's not a test and it doesn't cover more than one Chapter. It ONLY covers chapter 4. Here, I'll write it on the board.
Some kid in the back: Wait, we have a quiz on Thursday?

not hating man, i just honestly don't understand what being creative in free agency even means. nor do i understand how signing byrd represents "abandoning what they said they wanted to do."

plus, they brought back a long-time-gone phillie who may actually not be completely horrific. that's the first time that's happened in awhile... kinda creative maybe.

I'm not really sure what it means either, but I assume it means doing something in an unusual way that involves thinking outside the box (but what does THAT mean?!). It seems like this signing is the opposite of that. I feel like this signing is closer to the Phillies norm lately -- old guy signed after a good season to a longer contract than you would think is necessary.

It really seemed like they made a deliberate effort to push the "we're going to try to be creative" meme to the press, or at least it showed up multiple times, so I found the Byrd signing funny. Maybe it is creative in some weird way. I don't know.

i'm not even going to bother reading the rest of this thread. that would cancel out the big smile i got from the above.
i just copied it and posted it on my office door.
hopefully, a deal for batts that doesn't overpay in prospects goes through before i have to face the reality of the ugly, ugly signing of byrd.

What if he hits .260, with a .305 OBP and a .358 SLG (Ben Revere slugged .352 this year)? With 10 HR, 44 RBI, and 30 BB, with 109 K? in 635 PA / 589 AB?

That's exactly what he did in the 2 years before this year, combined. 2011-2012. So, there's definitely a "way" that he's not worth 2/16, and it's happened recently.

There are definitely ways for this to be an overpayment. Definitely.

But the option worries me not even a little. He will not get the PA necessary to activate that option without having been worth his salary in 2015.

I think MBT's point is that very real possibility is priced into the contract. If Amaro was basing it on last year, as most of the experts have alleged, it would have been for a lot more

really dude? c'mon. it's not an overpayment BASED ON THE DATA AT HAND. i would think every player in mlb history who's played for 10 years has had multiple past seasons that would represent an overpayment if they happened to be repeated in the current year. your point is completely silly.

but, wait. what if he hits .400, with a .650 obp and .800 slg? with 80 HR, 180 RBI, 100 BB, 0 K? see, there's a "way" it could be an underpayment!!!!!
