Is that realistic? I've never known the Phillies to dog someone like that. Especially a guy like Schierholtz with a reputation for whining about PT. Which is why he was our property in the first place.

It's incredibly realistic. "Hey, you go in as our starting rightfielder (or you go in with a chance to compete). We know you can hit righties which is the bulk of the playing time. We'll give you a chance to hit some lefties at first, if you do so, great. If not, we're going to use Mayberry. Also, here's your check for 2 million dollars. Shut up and sit in the corner."

That was beyond easy.

No you are right, years of recent work should not be weighted heavier. Almost no one improves in their age 26-28 seasons.

Then we can forget about last season, when he sucked. You should have mentioned this earlier to strengthen your argument.

103 OPS+ seems fine for a player with irregular playing time to me.

The one good thing about this season is we have a lot of guys who will be easy to replace.

I just looked at Youkilis's stats and his $12 million price tag. The nice thing about being a GM on a message board is that you don't have to actually live with the consequences of any decisions.

Hamilton would have saved us

You look at that thread and see pining for Youkilis and Hamilton. I look and see pre-defending a Pagan signing.

Maybe we can at least agree that the offseason (and season) turned out to be a fucking nightmare. We can disagree as to whether anything could have been done differently/better.

No I wouldn't go that far with the offseason. Even as optimistic as I am, I saw it as an approach to patch up a flawed team with little cost/risk beyond 2013

Aren't you forgetting about the broken toe in mid-August? I remember him playing well with the Phillies up to that point (but I may be wrong), albeit over something like a two-week stretch. It's safe to say that he wasn't healthy the rest of the year.

In his first 11 games with the Phillies (37 PAs) his line was .219/.278/.344/.622

His numbers were better in September.

I would absolutely be a terrible GM. Doesn't mean the real GM needs to be terrible too.
I know what you're asking yourself and the answer is yes. I have a nick name for my penis. Its called the Octagon, but I also nick named my testes - my left one is James Westfall and my right one is Doctor Kenneth Noisewater.

Yeah I was on-board with what you were saying until I looked it up. I think I remember his first game in which he had two hits and hit a game winning home run and remember being impressed. But that was the only home run he hit.

Yikes, and that was only true because he went 7 for 9 in his final three starts of the season. Until that point, he was 11 for 57 as a Phillies.

Sure it is. It's a hanful of good (but mostly aging) players with the rest of the roster occupied with AAAA talent. This is a bad team. A poorly assembled roster.

I meant as bad as their August record.

Thread title hasn't been changed yet, so I'm guessing no.

I'm not too worried about this franchise being in an extended run of suckitude like the mid 80's-90's were (93 excluded). With the TV deal looming and decreased ticket revenue and TV ratings the ownership just can't sit around twiddling their thumbs anymore. The best thing about the 5 year run was in effect it dramatically altered expectations. The ownership, fans, and the city started acting like the 4th largest media market in the country and invested accordingly. Things can't go back to the way they were, nobody will put up with it this time.

Sure, but there is great potential for an extended run of mediocrity due to bad management and decisions based on short-term gambles.
