Uh, no he didn't.

i guess your opinion comes down to how you want to frame his four below-average MLB seasons then. he plays good corner OF defense, can't play CF for shit and can't hit lefties. his D and his slightly above average hitting against righties makes him a marginally above-replacement level player. He also butted heads with management in SF. Tell me how he didn't suck at baseball

His has been an average to above average hitter since 2011.

His career OPS+ is 102, which is about as average as you can get and includes the three years where he was in the majors yet obviously still not done developing. He definitely sucked in 2010, but that's not entirely relevant to me.

No you are right, years of recent work should not be weighted heavier. Almost no one improves in their age 26-28 seasons.

I had forgotten about the BSG GMs and their desire to get Youklis for 3B this season. At least he wouldn't be hurting the team from the DL.

The one good thing about this season is we have a lot of guys who will be easy to replace.

So, this argument hinges on the definition of "suck."

Yeah, if sucks is average to above average then he does suck.

swisher kinda sucks this year-- .738 OPS this year vs .837 last year (.821 career), but he's still at a 111 OPS+ (127 last year, 118 career)

Schierholtz outperformed Nix by OPS+ in 2011 & 2012 only slightly. And Nix only earned $250K more from us in the two years than Schierholtz did this year

Obviously, in hindsight, it was a mistake. (Not that it ended up mattering.) But the other factor was playing time, and reportedly he went to the Cubs instead of the Yankees and Red Sox and others for the promise of more playing time. I'm guessing a December 1st announcement from Amaro that Schierholtz would play almost every day in RF wouldn't have gone over super well here.

Then, a separate mistake with Young.

You're right about that.

The Phillies have been pretty good at getting players who aren't in their plans to other teams where they can play. Justin Germano was the first I remember but there have been others. I think this is a good thing. I'd bet the Phils have a pretty good reputation as a good organization to play for.

minor correction - he wouldn't have had a choice about playing time if we offered arb.

I'm not going to get broken up about not signing schierholtz. It doesn't matter, it didn't matter. It's probably not a bad idea to never sign utility guys to multi-year contracts, but we're not allowed to talk in absolutes here so...

Is that realistic? I've never known the Phillies to dog someone like that. Especially a guy like Schierholtz with a reputation for whining about PT. Which is why he was our property in the first place.

I just looked at Youkilis's stats and his $12 million price tag. The nice thing about being a GM on a message board is that you don't have to actually live with the consequences of any decisions.

Then we can forget about last season, when he sucked. You should have mentioned this earlier to strengthen your argument.
