I've got no problem waiting out this market of misfits. When the music stops, one of them is going to be left without a chair. Happens every year it seems. Given the team's multiple needs, just about any one of them can help the team. Sign that guy to a short-term deal in January, get yourself a Mike Adams in the interim and keep your powder dry for the trade deadline. There will be some good opportunities then. Who would have thought Pence would have been available last year? Get that/those guy(s) and be ready for the stretch run & post season. Until them, just hope for a healthy roster.

Use FA to sign the elite guys. Use the trade market to fill the gaps for relievers and non-elite players.

Here's a list post-2013 free agents from MLBTR, some of these may have already been extended. Most aren't realistically going to be on the trade market. You could argue Utley is among the position players most likely to not be in a playoff race. :(

Corner Infielders
Paul Konerko, 1B
Kevin Youkilis, 1B/3B (if 2013 club option is exercised)
Michael Young, IF

Middle Infielders
Robinson Cano, 2B (if 2013 club option is exercised)
Ian Kinsler, 2B (if 2013 club option is exercised)
Asdrubal Cabrera, SS
Chase Utley, 2B

Corner Outfielders
Hunter Pence, RF
Michael Morse, LF
Nelson Cruz, RF
Alex Gordon, LF
Shin-Soo Choo, RF
Corey Hart, RF
Carlos Beltran, RF

Center Fielders
Jacoby Ellsbury, CF
Curtis Granderson, CF (if 2013 club option is exercised)

Catchers
Brian McCann (if 2013 club option is exercised)

Starting Pitchers
Tim Lincecum
Dan Haren
Matt Garza
Adam Wainwright (if 2013 club option is exercised)
Ubaldo Jimenez (if he voids 2014 option)
Josh Johnson
Ervin Santana (if 2013 club option is exercised)
Scott Baker (if 2013 club option is exercised)
Gavin Floyd (if 2013 club option is exercised)
Jair Jurrjens
Tim Hudson (if 2013 club option is exercised)
Jason Vargas

Relievers
Joel Hanrahan
J.J. Putz (if 2013 club option is exercised)

Probably going to need a lot of time to talk about all of the pick ups this offseason.

Is he any good?

The market sucks, but I don't like the decisions rube makes as a whole. He put us in this situation last year when he traded 2/3 of the starting outfield after running our payroll near the max.

But yeh, this collection of FAs kinda sucks.

Like next week I am fully expecting rumors about us being close to like a 4 year contract with Nate Schierholtz.

They tried to get pagan

Knowing market for Hamilton would develop slowly, he decided to spread some low ball offers to viable alternatives just to see if they bite. If they went elsewhere he knew that he could still come back to Hamilton. This is happening.

I can actually really get behind this theory. Upton would have been a bargain at 5/55, so much so that it would've been worth not having Hamilton. Dunno what they actually offered Pagan, but I'm guessing it was something along the same lines.

? How would keeping Victorino have changed anything? He would still be a FA and they can still sign him. Getting rid of Pence and Victorino got them below the lux tax last year which makes it easier to go over the lux tax this year.

Amaro not high on overall FA class. "I don't know that there is a difference maker. Well, maybe one." Hamilton? Rube: "Next question."
