BJ was pretty quick to dismiss on twitter last night so my guess is nothing is imminent

He still has a lot of pop and his defensive numbers have been consistently excellent in LF

I think he got a big defensive bump when he moved to Wrigley. Maybe it came from some more seasoning in LF, but his best year by far was his first year there. He's still above average by UZR though, and he's good enough that I'd love him if the Cubs ate a bunch of money. Plus I still haven't gotten over when McNabb got hurt for the season vs. Tennessee and the Cubs went over the top for Soriano on the same day

Jayson Stark

• Agents who have spoken with the Phillies say that despite their pursuit of both a center fielder and right fielder this winter, one option who apparently is no longer on their list is Josh Hamilton. Amaro wouldn't comment on any specific free agent, but said people who think the Phillies don't have the wiggle room to make a big signing are mistaken.

"I don't know that yet," he said. "We haven't been given a real budget. I know it's not unlimited, but that's not usually how we work. There are limitations, but each situation is unique, in and of itself. We didn't budget for Cliff Lee. But we signed Cliff Lee. We haven't budgeted for a bunch of things we've done. Each situation is different."

• Speaking of the Blue Jays, the Phillies have batted around the idea of an extension for baseball's most prominent former Blue Jay, Roy Halladay, but are proceeding slowly -- for now.

"I guess it's still possible," said Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. "But a lot has to do with how he feels and how he performs. So that's a decision and a conversation that would probably have to go into the spring, and maybe into the season."

Before Halladay's shoulder started acting up in midseason, the Phillies had actually had some preliminary talks with his agent, Greg Landry, about an extension that would keep Halladay in Philadelphia beyond next year -- and bring his salary more in line with the $24-million average annual value of Cliff Lee's deal. But Halladay's shoulder -- and the Phillies -- put an end to those talks.

"We kicked it around, but we tabled it," Amaro said. "It just wasn't the right time to focus on that."

Now, unless that extension talk resurfaces, Halladay will almost certainly become a free agent next winter. He'd need to bounce back from shoulder surgery and grind through 258 2/3 innings next year to vest his $20-million option for 2014. And only once in his 15 big-league seasons has he worked that many innings: In 2003. At age 26.

If Halladay's option doesn't vest (which is probably won't), they gotta re-sign him. He's Roy Halladay. (Unless his arm is torn off)

I can't really see him playing elsewhere unless the Phils fall from contention again which isn't happening

Part 2 of Steaks' interview with Rube:

-- The Phils haven't been quick to sign anyone this year because they have more holes than before and they're trying to figure out how to address all of them
-- Using a Frandsen/Galvis combination at 3B would depend on how much offense they get from all the other positions, or if their pitching is gonna put us in 2-1 types of games, and they've talked to several 3B candidates for trade and FA
-- Wigginton and Fontenot sucked at defense and we lost because of them
-- Talked to several relievers that "had surgeries and have warts" (Madson, Adams, etc.)
-- Has had contact with Madson, has no problems with him personally, and the issues last year were about money and opportunity
-- None of the players they've contacted have said "no" to them or said they weren't a fit with the club because the players and agents still view the Phils as a contender

I forget who pointed this out (probably one of the Crashburn guys i follow on twitter) but flexibility is one silver lining to having more obvious needs. you probably have a little bit more freedom to let everything fall into its right place instead of firing the first shots over the free agency bow

anyway, it's hard to tell what's smoke and what isn't, but unless they sign Hamilton AND either Upton or Bourn i want a third baseman. honestly i'd probably overpay for Youkilis first and then let the OF and middle reliever markets shake out before settling on somebody. Fernando Rodney was an elite reliever this year and he didn't sign until January 5. the Rays got him for 2 million dollars plus a club option. slam fucking dunk, and all it took was patience

good signing, I think. He's never really developed, but give our instructors a shot with him and who knows. Stranger things have happened, like Roswell and the alien crash, for example.

But that was a huge risk, the kind the Rays have no choice but to make. Patience is ideal, but the max-payroll teams needn't/shouldn't take that much of a risk in most cases imo

I hope we get our top target, at least, and can wait out a bargain

rodney wasn't a good pitcher when they signed him either. his turnaround was probably the most remarkable thing in baseball last year.
