The Phils "big moves" of the last four years:

Ibanez - December 12
Polanco - December 3
Lee - December 14/15
Papelbon - November 11

This is comin' soon, I'd guess.

I guarantee something will happen before Bynum plays for the Sizzlers.

I don't get this at all. The other three guys are better than Pagan and we have plenty of money to spend

I'm getting pretty worried that they haven't shitcanned TMac yet. It's not looking good.

I feel like the extension would have already happened if it were going to, with fewer paying attention. But that could be wishful thinking

Pagan gives you more flexibility as a switch hitter and assuming he comes cheaper, but what will they use the flexibility for? That's the question

it seems that lots of support from folks here (including me) for overpaying one or more of the imperfect free agents is based on the assuption that the phillies don't have the chips to trade for a significant upgrade.
so i want to ask:
who is the best player we could acquire via trade of a phil who is actually tradeable?
for the purpose of answering, please make the (hopefully reasonable) assumption that the untradeables are halladay, lee, hamels, papelbon, howard, utley, rollins, ruiz, and last year's draftees. i'll accept treating biddle, franco, and one of valle/joseph as untradeable as well. if you think one of the first group can be traded or wish to add others to the second group, please explain.

my own answer would be that the best we could get is span, which would require sending the twins worley plus one or two of kendrick/cloyd/pettibone/may/artin and a reliever, and then signing free-agent pitchers to fill the resulting holes. olt is a little out of reach, and justin upton and wright are way out of reach.

if they can get span, and sign uehara plus a well-chosen undervalued pitcher (liriano? haren?) i would be content with platoons of current phils in rf, lf, and 3b.
if they can't get someone at least as good as span in a trade, i would rather keep our current crop of starting pitchers and sign one of the outfield free agents.

Heard him doing the Pats-Colts postgame on the radio. Still sucks, but not as bad as him talking baseball.

Dave O'Brien gave me a damn heart attack last night. Was in line at Chipotle and saw on Twitter that he RT'd a Candy Van report that the Phils had signed BJ for 6/$98M. After my initial four-letter-word reaction, I scrolled around and saw no one else reporting this, then the Tweet disappeared followed by another Tweet from DOB saying he'd been suckered by a fake Twitter handle.

We should probably consider Alfonso Soriano too. I'm sure the Cubs would be happy to pitch in a significant amount of money. Say they eat 28mm over the next two years....I'd definitely prefer Soriano for 2-10 (w/o giving up any top prospects) than whatever Cody Ross will get. He still has a lot of pop and his defensive numbers have been consistently excellent in LF
