Is it on everything AFTER 170 or whatever million or do they then tax you on the entire payroll?

i thought it was on the entire payroll when you went over the threshhold. i know that normal taxes don't work that way but i thought MLB's did.

wiki answered my question:
A team that goes over the luxury tax cap for the first time in a five-year period pays a penalty of 22.5% of the amount they were over the cap, second-time violators pay a 30% penalty, and teams that exceed the limit three or more times pay a 40% penalty. The cap limit for 2010 is $170 million, and the cap for 2011 is $178 million.[9]

yeah, no reason why they shouldn't go over the cap.

So it's conceivable that the Phils go over the luxury tax threshhold for this year, pay a 22.5% penalty for the small amount they are over, but with an increase to the luxury tax threshhold next year they might actually be over this year and still under for next year.

I don't exactly know what the Fan ELO rater is on b-r, as I haven't bothered to research it, but right now it says that Larry Bowa is the #647 batter of all time - and Pat Burrell is #649. Whatever ELO is, it's worthless.

Hilarious twitter massacre because some douchebag from Brooklyn is trying to compare Freddy Garcia's season to CLIFF LEE'S season, which was RT'd by none other than Buster_ESPN, who proves he is completely incapable of doing his job, AGAIN.

It's a 70's era pop/rock band with Jeff Lynne. But that's not important right now.

Brookover
So, if the Phillies still want Pence, Wade's cell phone is still turned on and he's still tuned in. The price for Pence is high, as it should be for a guy who entered Monday hitting .308 with 62 RBIs, with a rifle right-field arm that led the National League with nine outfield assists.

The key question for the Phillies is probably whether they're willing to part with their own rightfielder, 23-year-old Domonic Brown. If that is the question, the answer has to be yes.

"That's a good trade for both clubs, but the Astros would need more to make it happen," a National League scout said.

If that's the case, then the Phillies should offer Brown and more.

A year ago, it took three players - major-league ready J.A. Happ and minor-league prospects Jonathan Villar and Anthony Gose - to pry Roy Oswalt away from the Astros. Pence, 28, is younger, cheaper and an everyday player who will not be a free agent until after the 2013 season.

If it takes Brown, single-A Clearwater first baseman Jonathan Singleton, and even Clearwater pitcher Jared Cosart, then the Phillies need to get the deal done because Pence is the guy who gives them the best chance of winning the 2011 World Series.

So Lee throws all 162 games and the opposing pitcher faces him close to 4 times per game in each one... got it!

sheesh

That's crazy... he wants to give up Brown, who still has the upside to be a better player than Pence in the long run plus our top position and pitching prospect

I could see making an argument that a Brown for Pence swap makes some kind of sense, I personally wouldn't do it, but I could understand an argument in favor of it, but giving up Brown, Singleton, and Cosart is just insane unless you are getting Kemp or Ubaldo.

My favorite part of the deadline passing will be not hearing any more about Hunter Fucking Pence.
